Well the biggest difference is the ap2 wheels are all wider than the ap1 wheels so they can accommodate wider tires! A big part of why the Viper ACR can handle so good, other than just all the downforce and suspension is that the tires are so huge and grippy.

Going from 205/55/16 to 215/45/17 in the front will likely result in a small improvement in handling, and having a 245/40/17 in the rear instead of 225/50/16 should help with traction and also help negate some of the oversteer tendency of the ap1 as it should help keep the rear more planted. So it's definitely an overall performance improvement going from ap2 size to ap1 size wheels/tires.

For around town, the occasion spirited drive on a weekend the wider tire accommodates a tad more mechanical grip.

Now, we could start analyzing scrub radius and rotational mass but unless you're out on the track at the limit for extended period of times it really wont matter. Remember, given the same conditions a wider tire has the same size contact patch as the narrow tire if the weight of the car is the same and tire pressure remains the same. The contact patch shape is what changes and the elongated patch of a 215 over a 205 or a 245/255 over a 225 (even though the S-02 225 runs like a 245...) the handling feels more planted.

At the end of the day the REAL advantage is the availability of a larger selection of better tires for the 17" wheel. That being said, depending on the circumstance I would take a 16" S-02 over a 17" S-04 for a weekend in the mountains...(But I have both )

215/245 on S-04's is a great summer combo for scooting around town. I'm actually running 215/255's on AP2v1's but whenever I plan on some spirited mountain driving I go back to my AP1/S-02 set up.
I ordered a set of S-04's today. I am looking forward to getting these new wheels and tires on my new 02. Do you all think there is any reason for me to keep the original ap1 wheels?

I am really enjoying this car. I drove a 67 Austin Healey Sprite as a young guy. It was a beater but a lot of fun. I resisted the temptation to buy another sports car for 40 years. I had other things that I needed to tend to. But now I am able do this and I am really enjoying myself. I feel very fortunate. I have a Tundra for winter and the s2k for summer. We had a glorious day today in Vermont. Perfect weather. We are blessed with countless beautiful country roads. Life is good.
Yes - I am in the Appalachia region of North Carolina and a day in the mountains is good for the soul. I sometimes drive with a group of European roadsters - the spiritual grandfather of the S2000!

Keep them as long as you have a place to store them. They are practically worthless so you won't get much if you sell them. When you sell the car, put them back on and you will have a nice stock AP1. Then sell the AP2V3, might be worth even more in the future as there seems to be a high demand.

Can you explain why? I'm going to find out for myself soon obviously. I have been a little surprised by steering feel of my stock ap1. I expected it to have some over steer - I expected the steering to feel pretty light. In fact my impression is that the steering feels a bit heavy. Its great mind you - I am just splitting hairs probably and I don't have enough experience to compare to other cars. But I will say that my first impression has been that the steering feels a bit on the heavy side of the spectrum - maybe its because the tires are not holding air real well so I have to keep topping off the pressure every couple days - I do notice it when the pressure has dropped. The steering takes a bit of effort.

or maybe your rack and bushings are shot? The unique things about the S2000 steering is that even thought it was an electronic assisted system you could still really feel the road. Both my S-02s and S-04's give great feedback and even though steering feels effortless it is very precise and sharp...

"...or maybe your rack and bushings are shot?"

With just 8500 miles? I would be surprised if that were the case. No, the characteristic I'm describing is nothing so dramatic. I think probably its just my inexperience talking. But, I am anxious to see how it feels with a different set of wheels and tires.

They can make a difference, my extreme performance ZII Star Specs give good feedback (upgrade over stock) I need to put on for summer--

Long story, they'd normally be on my s2000 which I currently have two of yet which neither one is safe to drive at the moment until they get taken to the shop--the ap1 needs wheel lug bolts, the ap2 I think needs new rear calipers -- , give excellent feedback and feel imo. And I need a couple weekdays off work, which are finally coming up with vacation time requested next week.

If you don't have the tires yet, they should be there soon. Mine came in three business days (may have some how even been two), tirerack is usually pretty quick on shipping out orders.

You can easily fit 225/45/17 and 255/40/17 on the OEM AP2 wheels. Those are the sizes that I would recommend on those wheels. I have those sizes on my CR and I'm quite happy with it.
