Home-Built Hot Rod

These days, it's not terribly easy to find a vehicle that's been completely built and maintained by its owner and not a mechanic or professional shop. And for good reason - not every automotive enthusiast is skilled or knowledgeable enough to do so. But that's precisely the case with Josh Matteson (otherwise known as AP1Chief in the S2Ki forums) and his wicked, home-built S2000, which also just so happens to be incredibly quick in a straight line.

Built to the Hilt

YouTuber That Racing Channel recently caught up with Matteson to get the scoop on his amazing ride, and it makes for some truly entertaining footage. Right off the bat, Matteson admits that his F20C is a relatively basic build sporting a sleeved block, 10:1 pistons, some beefier rods, a fully built Jeremy Allen head, and the proverbial cherry on top - a large turbocharger.

Multiple Upgrades

This S2000 has been through a total of four turbos including this setup, as it started out with a 62mm huffer and then upgraded to a 69 and 72 before Matteson "bit the bullet" and upgraded to this Precision 7275 Gen 2, which is the owner's personal favorite so far. Thanks to a cut-out exhaust, he can drive it on the street without waking up the folks two counties over, too.

Eighth-Mile Terror

Perhaps most impressively, Matteson does his own tuning - a practice that started out as a hobby but quickly grew into a business. Now, through JM Turning, Matteson offers his services to others, and obviously, he's got a pretty sweet ride to show off his skills in that regard, as it's both a street car and an eighth-mile terror.

Pile of Broken Parts

Running anywhere from 25-50 pounds of boost depending on the opponent and the conditions, Matteson also has a special tune for every situation. At its peak, the fortified F20C makes well over 900 horsepower, which is enough to blow up a total of three transmissions to date. That's precisely why Matteson decided to upgrade to a beefy Powerglide unit from ATF Speed.

Taking a Beating

Needless to say, this S2000 is one heck of a thrill ride, as it simply hooks and goes. The two-speed gearbox helps keep the four-cylinder powerplant in it the optimum powerband, which is why the Powerglide has remained such a popular choice with drag racers over the years. Matteson calls it "the best thing I ever did" and says "you can literally beat the Powerglide and they don't break."

Grocery Getter

Perhaps best of all, Matteson admits that he doesn't want to tear up his S2000 and make it a full-blown, cut-up racer. Instead, he uses it for grocery runs, picking up the kids, or any other number of myriad tasks, and for a regular old street-driven car, you're not likely to ever find anything better.
