Tribute to the Past

The automotive world was briefly thrown into a frenzy when Honda announced it would be bringing what they called the "20th Anniversary S2000 Prototype" to this year's Tokyo Auto Salon. Some people took this as a hint that Honda was considering bringing back the legendary model, but in reality, it's more of a tribute to the past. Thankfully, Japanese news outlet Auto Home was on hand to capture some more pictures of this interesting machine for us to mull over.

Unique Look

Honda used the first-gen AP1 as a base for this updated ride, then fitted it with a host of new exterior components to change up the look a bit. They include a restyled front bumper, fenders, side sills, and rear spoiler. The overall look remains much the same, but it's different enough to stand out on its own.

Aero Enhanced

The new nose features a larger opening, which obviously aids cooling efforts. It's also longer than the original piece, which is quite obvious by the added material underneath the headlights. Honda also says that the new bumper helps improve aerodynamics by reducing the airflow that would normally get trapped in the front wheel wells, improving straight-line stability as a result.

Familiar Details

The 20th Anniversary S2000 rolls on a set of black Yokohama Advan Racing alloys with silver highlights. Interestingly enough, the side strakes in front of all four wheels, along with the black ducktail spoiler, were all available from Modulo back when the car was still in production. But they certainly look great here, anyway.

Mysterious Upgrades

Honda also says that this revised S2000 features an "updated suspension," but failed to share any further details. They also didn't say if these parts or any others present on the 20th Anniversary car will be available solely in Japan or in other markets like here in the U.S.

Refreshed Insides

On the inside, you'll find updated red seats, a new stereo cover, red floor mats, and a Panasonic touchscreen display. There are all sorts of "S2000 20th Anniversary" inscriptions everywhere, including on a new wind deflector. A redesigned soft top cover rounds out this refreshed package.

Waiting Game

Ultimately, we expect many of these new parts to become available from Honda Access in the near future. The automaker didn't share as many details as we would have liked in Tokyo but did state that they'd release all the pertinent information, including a full list of available accessories, on February 20. So stay tuned!
