Final Non-Electric Type R?

Recent reports suggest that the next generation of the Honda Civic's sporty Type R variant could be the last Type R without an electric/hybrid powertrain in Europe. Honda has made a commitment to introducing fully electric or hybrid versions of its popular models between 2022 and 2025. And that means the new Type R will likely be the last one without some sort of electrification.

Testing Under Camo

Honda unveiled a pre-production model of the 2022 Honda Civic a few months ago. And spy shots have been captured of what surely looks like the next Type R in heavy camouflage. The test mules feature a lot of the same sporty characteristics as the current and past generations of the Civic Type R.

Same Character

The rear wing appears to remain a prominent element of the next-gen Type R. Additionally, large vents and intakes can be spotted peeking out from behind the camo. As far as performance, not much is known at this point. Early rumors suggested that this upcoming model would boast a hybrid power source to give it a bump in power. But the most recent reports indicate that the turbo four-cylinder will the powering the new Type R as well.

More Power?

Surely, if it is the exact same power plant, the Honda engineers will be making tweaks and enhancements to extract even more power from it. And given the fact that the Type R platform has proven it can handle the stock 316 horses without any issue, an increase in power would be appropriate.

Hybrid Type R Isn't All That Bad

With that said, the end of the Type R's reign of internal combustion power isn't necessarily a bad thing. Hybrid technology in motor racing has become incredibly sophisticated. And many see it as a way to keep internal combustion around for longer.  As we've already seen in hypercars such as the Porsche 918, McLaren P1, and Ferrari LaFerrari, a performance automobile can benefit greatly from the help of an electric motor's instant torque, while maintaining the beautiful sound of its ICE. And the Civic Type R is no different.
