Pure Speculation

Rumors of the Honda S2000's return have perpetuated for years now, even though there's no actual evidence that such a revival will actually happen. In fact, it doesn't even make much sense to many that love the sporty roadster, which wouldn't quite have the same appeal to most if it comes back as a fully-electric model. Regardless, rumors continue to perpetuate indicating that the S2000 may make a comeback in 2025, so it's worth diving into that speculation in the meantime.

Size Wise

Most expect this theoretical next-gen S2000 to retain proportions that are similar to the prior model, which makes quite a bit of sense. A compact, lightweight roadster from the start, much of the S2000's appeal lies in those qualities, which also make it more fun to drive. It would be difficult to design a new S2000 that's not heavier than the original, however, thanks to the prevalence of modern safety tech.

No N/A?

The biggest - and most controversial - topic surrounding the possibility of a new S2000 is what will power it. Many would expect it to be all-electric, given the direction of the world today, but it's probably a safe bet that if it isn't an EV, the next-gen S2000 will at least be sold with a turbocharged powerplant of some sort - not the naturally-aspirated I-4 that made it famous in the first place, as that's the direction automakers are going in.

Platform

Honda doesn't currently have a rear-wheel-drive, front-engine platform in its portfolio, which would present a bit of a conundrum given development costs. Leaning on another automaker for suitable underpinnings would make a lot of sense, as is the case with the Toyota Supra and its BMW roots, though such a move would also be a bit controversial. Honda does currently enjoy a partnership with GM, so perhaps it could borrow something from the Detroit-based automaker, at least.

Expected Arrival

Rumors have perpetuated for years that Honda plans on bringing back the S2000 in 2024 for the 2025 model year - just in time for its 25th anniversary. However, Honda marked its 20th anniversary with nothing more than a gussied-up concept sporting new parts, so we'll continue to take all of these rumors with a huge grain of salt.
