Future Models

Rumors of an S2000 revival have swirled for years now, many of them pointing toward some sort of all-electric version of the legendary sports car. For now, at least, that speculation has led to exactly nothing, though Honda did just reveal that it's working on developing two new EV sports cars that sound rather intriguing.

Big Plans

Honda is investing $30 billion into EVs over the next decade as it aims to transition its lineup to all-electric vehicles. Recently, the automaker also revealed a road map of how it plans to get to that point, and interestingly enough, that plan includes not just one, but two new sports car models.

Refreshing Take

Some are indeed referring to these models as electric S2000 and NSX successors, and that may wind up proving an accurate assessment, though it's too early to tell at this point. Regardless, in a world filled with crossovers, it's a refreshing take on the future of mobility.

Precious Few Details

The secretive, under-cover models don't reveal much about these future vehicles, but there are some clues as to what's going on underneath. One of the EVs has a long hood like the S2000, while the other features shorter overhangs like a mid-engine vehicle. Honda didn't provide any further details about the intriguing models, however.

30 Models, Three Markets

The two EV sports cars are part of a planned 30 all-new electric vehicles bound for Honda's global lineup by 2030 ahead of a major investment and transition to solid-state battery power when it's feasible. All of the new EVs will be focused on three big markets, however - China, North America, and Japan.

Securing the Bag

Honda is aiming to build around 2 million EVs per year by that same date, a lofty goal that's common among other automakers these days. Regardless, Honda is also working to secure the supplies it needs to accomplish that goal, most notably, lithium-ion batteries via a partnership with General Motors.

Wait and See

Honda's low-cost EV models and crossovers will undoubtedly drive the volume it needs to move forward into the next era of automobiles, but the fact that it is also rolling out two new sports cars proves that it's serious about serving those that like to drive, too. Whether or not one of those models is a proper S2000 successor, well, we'll just have to wait and see.
