Important Considerations

When it comes to modifying any car to make more power, superchargers and turbochargers have become the defacto go-to option, and for good reason - they're both easy ways to add a considerable amount of power to a vehicle. This is also true of the Honda S2000, which is why so many choose to go the forced induction route. But as is always the case, there are some important things to keep in mind for those that are considering slapping a turbo on their inline-four that we'll detail here.

High and Low End

One of the main benefits of turbocharging an S2000 is the fact that it adds power at both the low and top end. The latter is significant because the car's inline-four is a peaky motor that makes most of its power at the top end. This makes turbos an appealing option, but it's also important to keep in mind that the F20C/F22C1 has its limitations, which usually equates to around 400 horsepower before the internals will need to be addressed.

Ease of Installation

Those that choose to go the turbo route will find a plethora of options in the aftermarket for boosting an S2000. Some of these kits are designed to be easy to install, while others require a bit of custom fabrication and mechanical know-how. Choosing the latter option can generally save you a lot of money, with some DIY kits costing half what a more comprehensive kit might cost.

Big Variance

Tuner kits can be had for as little as $2,500, though they may not come with a tune or the required upgraded fuel system, though that gives owners more options. More comprehensive kits can cost upwards of $6,000, but come with everything you'll need to get the job done, and can be completed by most with a mechanical inclination.

Labor Costs

As one might imagine, installing the turbo yourself can save a ton of money in labor, as professional installs can add several thousand to the overall cost. It's also important to realize that you generally don't want to add a bunch of power to your ride without upgrading a number of other supporting components.

Other Considerations

Aside from the engine's internals, things like the S2000's fueling system, cooling system, and the transmission's clutch and flywheel might also need to be upgraded along with a turbo install. You'll need the right tires to deliver all that extra power to the ground, which will also highlight any of your car's weaknesses and could potentially lead to breakage.

Pros and Cons

Obviously, the pros outweigh the cons of turbocharging, as it's a quick and easy way to add serious power to the S2000. But owners must be aware that as always, adding power isn't just a one-step solution, and it will undoubtedly make any car a bit less reliable, and perhaps considerably more so. Thankfully, Honda's legendary reputation for reliability does help out in that regard.
