Second Coming of NSX

The second generation of the NSX was a long time in the making. Not only was there an extended hiatus from the nameplate, but the development of the new iteration also took more than a few years to make. By the time Honda's newest mid-engine supercar made it to dealer lots in 2016, it had been more than 5 years since plans were announced. The delay didn't dwindle the enthusiasm of aftermarket builders like Canada's JJ Dubec MD, though.

Dr. Gearhead

A medical specialist by trade, JJ has been able to make his childhood dreams come true, adding supercar after supercar to his collection. And when it was time for the NSX to hit the market, he had put plans in place to pioneer aftermarket development for the Acura. His build is the first NSX with a Liberty Walk kit, the first one with an Air Lift Performance air ride system, and the first with an Armytrix titanium exhaust system.

Liberty Walk Kit

And the fact that JJ practically kick-started an aftermarket for the NSX came with numerous challenges, as is the case when doing things that have yet to be done. His first order of business was working with Wataru Kato of Liberty Walk to collaborate on designing a wide body kit for the car. The language barrier and time difference presented their challenges. But both sides were determined to accomplish this goal, and that's what they did.

Custom Armytrix Exhaust

The same challenges had to be overcome when working with Taiwan's Armytrix. JJ collaborated with the performance exhaust manufacturer on creating a catback setup for the NSX that features a variable valve to help unleash the roar when needed. It also comes with a quiet mode for a more stealth application. "One of the coolest parts of the build was that Armytrix flew out their main engineer to oversee the final installation in Vancouver,” JJ remarks.

Air Lift Performance Suspension

The next step was designing and configuring an air ride system for the NSX. And more collaboration was required in this department, this time with the folks at Air Lift Performance. Together, they developed and implemented the 3H management system, along with custom dampers and airbags. The setup gives the NSX high-performance handling when needed, and an ultra-comfortable ride around town.

Attention-Grabber

As JJ has done many times with multiple builds, this first-of-its-kind NSX build was naturally featured at the SEMA show in 2017. “I love driving this car,” he says. “It’s so precise to control and the power delivery is strong and direct – and with the modifications in place, it’s getting even more attention than my Liberty Walk Ferrari!”
