Simply Irresistible

We've all been bitten by the bug at least once in our lives. That irresistible desire to buy a car that just keeps getting more intense the more we try to ignore it. Mack Hogan had that itch when it came to the S2000 after relocating to New York with zero cars in his possession, and it proved to be more than he could resist, as he explained in this entertaining Road & Track piece.

Opportunity Knocks

One of Hogan's fellow employees sent out an email to his colleagues one day to see if anyone was interested in purchasing his father's AP1. The car had a mere 36k miles on the clock, with just a few minor cosmetic issues, and was selling for a song. The car was bone stock, mechanically perfect, and obviously loved by its previous owner. What's not to love?

Attainable Dream Car

Hogan calls the S2000 his "attainable dream car," though at this time he always considered them to be out of his budget. This particular S2000 fit within his price range. "I had to jump," he said. "The S2000 is a dream car, the number one thing on my 'must own before I die' list." Hogan fell in love with the car after doing some laps in one at Mid-Ohio Driving School, and it's been on his mind ever since.

Grin Inducing

Everything fell into place for the purchase, too, almost as if the sea was parting to make this pairing a reality. And so far, Hogan hasn't regretted his purchase one bit. He admits that he "grins like an idiot" every time he sees it, and driving the car is even more smile-inducing. "With it warmed up, I let the S2000's engine run all the way to 9,000 rpm, and I fell back in love with the absurd, exponential power delivery of the little 2.0-liter that requires 7,500 rpm to deliver peak torque."

More Than an Exchange

This is one of those rare transactions where a car goes from a person who loves it to a person that deserves to take over the ownership of it. It's more than just a simple exchange of goods for currency. And to us, that's the way every one of these special cars should change hands - from one enthusiast to the next so that they can survive for many generations to come.
