True Oddity

Mugen has produced a host of cool parts and entire concepts over the years, but few compare to the strange and somewhat forgotten SS2000 - a one-off, single-seat concept produced by the aftermarket tuner that debuted at the 2000 Tokyo Auto Show. Aside from being a bit strange and impractical, the SS2000 is also notable for looking futuristic even now, a full 21 years later.

Different Cockpit

Purely a design exercise, the SS2000 certainly turned every head when it was revealed decades ago with a cockpit that looks more like something you'd see in a race car than the S2000's factory threads. The instrument panel looks like it came straight from a motorcycle, while there's a racing seat, harness, and roll bar for safety.

Bizarre but Cool

Everything here that isn't custom comes from Mugen, of course, including its huge rear spoiler, rear bumper, air intakes, and various other bits and pieces. A set of 18-inch MD-F wheels, along with partial headlight and taillight covers, helps pull it all together in a truly bizarre-looking package.

Power Bump

Putting the SS2000 on a diet resulted in a concept that weighed a mere 2,100 pounds, however, which undoubtedly helps performance. Meanwhile, the F20C inline-four received a bit of a rework with forged pistons and a displacement increase to 2.2 liters, which gave it a bit of a power bump - 11 horsepower - for a total of 258 ponies.

Improved Performance

Coupled with the weight loss, that was good enough to propel the SS2000 from 0-62 miles-per-hour in just 5 seconds flat, a big improvement on the stock time of 6.2 seconds. It was truly an interesting product, but one that ultimately just didn't make sense for production.

Revisiting an Idea

Regardless, Mugen once again revisited the idea of a racing-focused S2000 a few years later in 2007, when it produced the Open-Top Pure Sports Concept, though that particular model was a two-seater. Thus, the SS2000 still stands alone as one of the strangest yet most interesting versions of Honda's open-air sports car ever produced.
