Perfect Match

Nitto's Driving Line has long hosted a very cool video series dubbed Driver Battles, which pits two very interesting custom builds against each other on the track to see which can set the fastest lap time. We've seen some very different vehicles duke it out in this series in the past, but this time around, a Honda S2000 Club Racer sparring with a Subaru BRZ seems like the perfect match between two reasonably similar cars.

Modest Build

Will Wattanawongkiri's buddy's BRZ has been treated to some pretty simple yet effective modifications that include a set of SPL/WRT control arms, WRT coilovers, and Volk Racing TE37 wheels with Nitto NT01 tires. That's pretty reasonable given the high level of builds we've seen on Driver Battles before, but he seems pretty confident, regardless.

Give It a Go

"My friend Jay came to me with 'Hey, I'm building this BRZ for SEMA. I've got a show car but do you want to check it out and have some fun with it?' I'm like, 'Sure' and then I got called for Driver Battles and figured, 'Why not? Let's see what happens,'" Wattanawongkiri said.

Club Racer

On the flip side, we have Son Vo and his S2000 CR, which has a stock F22C powerplant but various other modifications that make it faster around a track including a Spoon LSD differential, Ohlins DFV 14KG coilovers, and Volk Racing wheels wrapped with Nitto NT01 tires measuring 255/40ZR17.

Tight Result

After taking some hot laps at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway, the two get to find out who had the quickest time of the day in a tense moment. Regardless, Vo and his S2000 manage to run a best time of 2:02.9, while the BRZ managed a best time of 2:02.1 in a seriously tight result.

Minor Tweaks

Yes, a mere eight-tenths of a second is all that separated these two vehicles on the track, which is about as close as it gets. Vo notes that his coilover settings were a bit off with this particular tire setup, which might have made the difference, but to us, it's impressive that this 14-year-old machine can still hang with modern vehicles on the track, too.
