Keep It in the Family

You rarely see an engine-swapped S2000, and for good reason. The F20C and F22C were both excellent, high-revving engines that have rightfully won lots of awards for being some of the best mills ever produced. Regardless, that didn't stop Michael Trujillo from doing something very different with his AP2 S2000, though he did decide to keep its powerplant in the family, so to speak.

Dare to be Different

Trujillo wanted to do something a little different with his car, and this certainly qualifies. Instead of going with an LS or even a Dodge V10, he sourced a 3.2-liter J32A2 V6 from a 2003 Acura TL Type-S for his ride. That engine is rated at 260 hp and 232 lb-ft, which is a small upgrade in ponies but a massive increase in torque compared to the original four.

Modifications Needed

Interestingly enough, the new engine is an easy fit in the spacious AP2 engine bay, too. A few changes were required, however, as Trujillo had to flip the intake runners and plug the EGR port to get the intake facing forward. He also had to cut the throttle body and weld it back at a downward angle to clear the factory hood.

New Stuff

In addition, Trujillo installed a modified K&N S2000 intake system and a factory F22C throttle cable and throttle body, while removing the butterfly actuator. There's also a new K-Tuned billet thermostat housing, Mishimoto dual-core radiator, and InlinePro exhaust headers. Finally, the oil pan has also been modified to make the new mill fit neatly.

Original Stuff

The S2000's original six-speed manual transmission is still in place and connects to the V6 using an InlinePro adapter plate with an ACT clutch and Competition flywheel. The car even retains its factory air conditioning using a custom bracket for the factory S2000 compressor along with a Ballade Sports A/C kit.

Still Working

The original gauges work too, thanks to a modified S2000 wiring harness Trujillo built himself and an AEM Series 2 EMS. The driveshaft and rear-end are stock and unmodified, too. As far as power, Trujillo hasn't had his car on the dyno just yet, so we're not entirely sure. But it's a cool project, nonetheless.

Trailblazing Build

Whether or not this big change was worth it is up for debate. But you can't fault Trujillo for wanting to do something a little bit different. If nothing else, he's certainly proved that swapping an Acura V6 into one of these cars isn't terribly difficult, making him a trailblazer of sorts.
