Hanging In

The Honda S2000 may be long gone from this world, but it has only gotten more popular in the years since its discontinuation. That lasting appeal can be largely attributed to its fantastic chassis and powertrain, which make it an incredibly fun car to drive on the road and the track. It may not be quite as fast as a C8 Corvette, 911 GT3 RS, or 718 Cayman S in stock form, but in this video from RearWheelDrive, it doesn't disappoint when going up against those cars in a quick autocross.

Stark Contrast

These are all technically sports cars, but at the same time, they're also all quite different. First up, we have the new C8, a mid-engine, V8-powered American ride that is rated to produce 495 horsepower from its naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter LT2. On the other side, there's the track-focused 911 and its N/A 4.0-liter flat-six that offers up 500+ horsepower and little weight to push around.

Power Broker

As most are well aware, the 718 Cayman S is no slouch either, thanks to its turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four that lays down 350 horsepower in a sublime chassis. Thus, the S2000 in this test is by far the least powerful machine, but a tight autocross doesn't require massive amounts of power to get around quickly, anyway.

Tiny Go-Kart?

In fact, our host admits that the S2000 is his favorite to be the quickest around the track before the competition even begins. He calls it a "tiny go-kart," which is a pretty accurate description when compared to these larger machines. Regardless, the results are all that matters, and we soon get to see how each car fares around the homemade track.

Results

The Porsche is up first and records a 25.22-second lap time, which the crew adds a two-second penalty to for hitting a cone. Regardless, a Nissan GT-R shows up and gives it a go as well, ripping off a 23.76 and taking the lead. The S2000 hits the track and records a very respectable 25.27-second run, but the driver hits two cones in the process as well.

Multiple Runs

The C8 is up next, and manages a 24.14, though the driver also hits multiple cones along the way. The S2000 gives it another go and proves to be rather consistent, running a 25.36-second lap. The GT3 improves its time to 24.87, while the Cayman eventually nails a 22.67, beating out the competition with ease.

Bargain Proposition

While all of these cars are incredibly different, they all posted pretty similar results in the end. But the S2000 is, without a doubt, the most impressive of the bunch. After all, with little power and lacking the modern tech some of these other newer cars possess, it managed to hang right in there. And that's really saying something, especially since it was just a few hundredths behind the crazy expensive 911 GT3.
