Forgotten Gem

The Honda Accord Type R is a forgotten gem of the early 2000s Honda lineup. While models such as the Integra Type R and Civic Type R of the same era are still highly regarded among enthusiasts, the larger Accord sedan now lives mostly in obscurity. But as our colleague Matt Bell over at Fast Car UK will be quick to tell you, in truth, the Accord is an amazing driver's car.

Underwhelming at First

As it was for Bell, getting behind the wheels of an Accord Type R could be underwhelming at first for a lot of people. After all, we live in an era when every economy car has a turbocharged engine with over 200 horsepower. So the lack of low-end torque with the Accord can be off-putting.

Brilliant Driver's Car

But once you get higher in the rev range and row through the gears on a back road, you will gain plenty of appreciation for the driving dynamics. Unlike today's vehicles, this performance sedan will not make it easy for you. But through the process of learning how to take full advantage of the VTEC, you will rediscover your love for driving.

Sporty AND Comfortable

Being an Accord, the car can also naturally serve as a nice and comfortable commuter. The fist three gears are designed for canyon road fun, but once you're in 5th, the car's rowdy behavior becomes tamed and comfortable. Higher speed freeway driving is accompanied by some noise, though. The car will be revving at around 4,500 RPM at 80 miles an hour!

Some Drawbacks

It's not exactly a Ferrari, so there are some negatives to point out. The lack of torque when under the VTEC RPM range can be challenging to deal with. And while the first three gears will give you plenty of fun, the fourth gear is just a bit too tall. It can take your momentum away in acceleration. That could be remedied, though, with a remap of the VTEC range.

Pound-for-Pound King

Sadly for us Americans, the Accord Type R was exclusive to the European and Japanese markets, so finding one used isn't exactly as easy as jumping on craigslist. For enthusiasts in Europe, however, an Accord Type R is possibly pound-for-pound the most fun you can get out of a vehicle.
