Trading a Supercharged M3 for a Stock S2000 Was a Great Move

Making a Trade

No matter what brand of automobile you fancy, it's hard to deny that the BMW M3 is a fantastic car. Especially when you own one fitted with a supercharger, as YouTuber JayEmm on Cars once did. But despite the joy that a particular car gave him, Jay couldn't resist the siren song of the S2000. And before you knew it, he had traded his beloved Bimmer for one

Seeking Something Else

Jay's E92 BMW was far from stock, pushing out a healthy 625 horsepower from its supercharged 4.0-liter V8. The car was also equipped with an adjustable suspension setup and bigger brakes with an eye toward on-track performance. Regardless, he was seeking something precise, versatile, and straightforward to replace it. And he found exactly that in an S2000.

Long Term Purchase

"I've owned it for about three or four months now," Jay reveals in his video. "In that time I've done 8,000 very enjoyable miles and I can see the car staying around for quite some time. I've gone through a lot of cars, I will happily confess. But I've gotten to the point where I really want to start buying cars I can see staying around for the long term."

Exciting, Not Exciting

Even better, Jay made out pretty well financially speaking with his swap. "This is about a third of the value of the M3," he said. "And honestly, this is such a better car for me to have today. The M3 was brilliant, a silly, powerful, hardcore track car that let me have a lot of fun on track days." But at the same time, it just didn't excite him the same way on public roads.

Track Only

After going on high-speed blasts around town, Jay just didn't get much return for his investment. "I wasn't interested," he said. "It just did not excite me. I thought this is a speed that could land me in serious trouble and I'm not even enjoying it. The only place I could really enjoy that car was on the track."

Perfect Alternative

Thus, the S2000 seemed like a perfect alternative. "I've always enjoyed convertibles," Jay said. "It's a British thing. I wanted a simple roof-down two-seater convertible that I could just enjoy on these roads. I can have fun in this car. The gearbox is amazing, the car looks superb. They are quite special, and the amazing engine revs to the moon and back."

Familiar Attributes

To hardcore S2000 fans, those attributes probably sound pretty familiar. After all, they're also the same reasons why we love our own cars. So let those other folks have their high-powered, fancy modern cars. We'll take our fun little high-revving roadsters any day of the week.
