Well guys, its that time again! Time to start thinking about putting up our nice toys and breaking out the winter beaters. Whats the best winter beater?
Rules:
- cheap

- decent to drive
Two categories:
1. Under $6000
2. Under $3000
What would you buy?!

Pickup trucks are generally solid buys, but can't go wrong with a Subaru as mentioned above.

I just picked up a used 2010 Toyota Tacoma Regular cab 4x4. That's a good winter vehicle. You can probably find a high-mile Toyota Tacoma for under 6000. Resell value is really high.

Under 6,000- Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger.
Under 3,000- Jeep Cherokee

In north carolina, more people with 4x4's wreck on the icy roads than those with 2wd (trucks and jeeps and such). My 2wd truck has been effortless in the snow and ice, on and off the highway. I have loved my 2wd truck since i've had it, about a year and a half now i think. I'll never sell the thing. I love it too much
excellent beaters are definitely the corollas or camrys with higher mileage. they're really inexpensive, tons to choose from typically, and they really can take a "beating" from a dumb previous owner. I would recommend a honda accord or civic but there's too much of an unreasonable demand for them so the cost is unnecessarily higher. i would go with the toyota for a beater. in my experience, people took better care of them than the honda equivalents too

I feel alot more comfortable driving a 4x4 truck compared to a 2wd truck. Isn't the back pretty light on trucks causing it to lose traction easier? I feel like people wreck in 4x4s because they are exceeding the speed limit or their tires are to wide and just packing down the snow rather than cutting through it.
Front wheel drive vehicles usually have good traction. Subarus are good as well. I'm sure you can find a used impreza under 6,000.

My RWD mid size truck has given me zero problems as long as i'm not an idiot. I'm just saying, if you're conscious of consequences of your driving habits during snow/ice... then RWD is fine with a truck and an some regular grippier tires.

Anything reliable that everyone alrdy mentioned. Just do some maintenance right when you get it and throw winters on it. Tires make more of a difference than anything elae
