Default Porsche 718 Boxster & Boxster S Switch to Turbo 4s

"Believe it or not, the 2017 Porsche Boxster is an all new design, and instead of a flat-six, both the peasant-spec and fancier Boxster S will run with completely new turbocharged flat-four cylinders."

I personally think the front and rear styling are a step backwards. And while the engines are going to lose some of the famous Porsche flat-6 sound, they're going to offer more power, more torque, better acceleration, and better fuel economy than the outgoing car. This will be somewhat offset by a higher price. Also, since there is no mention of weight in the press release, you can assume it either weighs the same or more than the outgoing model.

The new cars are actually a fair amount quicker than the last one. The "S" model will make it to 60mph in 4.0 seconds with a PDK while the base model gets to 60 in 4.5 seconds (the same as the previous generation "S" model).

Overall impressive, but ultimately 2 steps forward and one step backward for me.

If I was in the market in 2017, I'd probably be OK with it. However, glad I got mine with a 6.

I'd rather have the linear power delivery of the 6 personally - I guess this means buying used, but then again, I still haven't been convinced to sell my S2000...

I'll miss the sound of the six but the specs of the four are mighty appealing.

-Guy who will never afford one.

dunno what to say.

is the rear wing retractable or fixed now?

front is def step back. I think Porsche makes worst looking front bumpers for base models. yuk. even the 911 base front bumper is butt ugly.

boxer 4 Subarus make pretty sounds. I hope Porsche boxer 4s make even prettier sounds than subies.

Don't get it, my 987.1 Cayman S sounded like a tractor that had some rocks thrown in the intake aka it sounded like garbage. My GT3 sounds pretty good but it has a GMG muffler delete. I wouldn't mind a sweet turbo 4 in the new Cayman/Boxster, just wait till some people have tunes for them. It will be the first time you can pick up 50+ hp and torque on a Boxster/Cayman with minimal mods.

The slats in the front bumper are hideous though, wtf.

Depends if Porsche uses EL or UEL header/manifold. If UEL it will not sound anything like the WRX/STI.

With the correct exhaust, the flat sixes sound amazing. The engineers are no doubt working as hard as they possibly can on the Sports Exhaust option for the new cars, but it won't sound as good as the outgoing motors.

Also, the spoiler in the back will almost certainly be retractable.

Should make the outgoing flat 6 Boxster and Cayman's a little more valuable than they would've been if they continued with the same engine.

I think it is the right move to further separate the Cayman/Boxster from the 911. Makes them even less a "911 wanna be". Now, they two are finally shed of that stigma IMO.
