Broken wheel studs

Default Broken wheel studs

Hi guys,

In the past 2 years I had 4 broken wheel studs on my S2000, always at the rear wheels. First time I thought the torque was to hard on the studs, and I bought an adjustable torque wrench to control them every now and then.
But then it happened again, and another 2 times.
On this moment, my 'safe' feeling is gone. Everytime I'm driving the S2000 a bit 'harder/faster', the unsafe feeling flips through my mind concerning another wheel stud who might get broken again.

My S2000 is a MY01, lowered on KW V3 coilovers and on BBS LM 18" wheels. Camber settings are UK spec, and checked and re-checked again. I did 3 trackdays in the last 2 years, so I'm not a dedicated trackday driver.

At the garage of a friend we started to put some research in this problem.
He found out that the wheels & lug nuts aren't bolted enough on the OEM wheel studs, because those wheel studs seem a bit too short. That could result in another weight point on those studs, which could result to brake off.

He could be right or not, but it's another signal for me I better switch to some extended lug nuts, made in some harder/better material (racing proof?)

I will keep reading my search results, but there are a lot of topics about it.

In the meantime, does anyone have a good tip for me which extended wheels studs are any good ? I did an order at a local garage/spare parts dealer, but he keeps telling me they will arrive soon but they're still in backorder. I'm tired of waiting, and considering to order them in the States now.
Maybe Tirerack sells extended wheel studs? I'm planning another order over there for brake rotors anyway.

Do you have the right nuts for the wheels? Some (like the OEM) use spherical seats and some use conical seats.

If you decide to change out your wheel studs ARP wheel studs are the way to go.

Absolutely, they are conical as it should be.

Anyone else who can post their knowledge and experience about this problem ?

I really want my safe feeling back when driving the S2000

My thought too...my understanding is that there shouldn't be side to side sheer pressure on the bolts, and that the hub takes that pressure. Again, as I understand it, the nuts should only be holding the wheel tight to the hub

If you're breaking studs, I'm inclined to think your wheel is putting inappropriate pressure on the studs. Perhaps there are hub-centric rings that should be installed between your wheel and the hub?

I bought some Team Dynamics Pro race rims and they supplied different wheel nuts to stock, cant rember which is which, but definately different to stock. Also stock gave 8 full turns to torque spec, my new nuts only go 7 full turns, any less than this I think could be a problem. H&R do wheel spacers with extended studs so they could just supply the studs, google them

this is kinda off topic, but not really....

On civics and integras, you can get away with putting in new studs by cutting the backend of the stud into a "D" shape. Basically you cut a flat spot in the back of the stud and it should be enough to get through the wheel hub.

has anyone tried this on an s2k?
