"THE GOONIES" 25th Anniversary Celebration
I grew up in Vermont, and when I was 8 years old I went to see "The Goonies" in a local theater. I remember watching the opening scene (the Fratelli's jail break) and completely falling under it's spell -- I remember my brain expanding and thinking I didn't know anything this cool was even possible.
Little did I know how much this movie would change my life.
I now work in Hollywood as a screenwriter, writing kids action/adventure movies.
Needless to say I've watched this movie countless times in the last 25 years.
It's one of my very few favorites, and I always promised myself that I'd someday visit Astoria, OR (where it was filmed).
Turns out there are thousands of other fans as nerdy as me who would all go at the same time.
Last weekend (6/3 - 6/7) was the official GOONIES 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION. The whole town opened up, and Goonies from all over the world flooded in. Every business in town had signage, every waiter or shopowner were dressed in Goonies t-shirts, and every menu had special Goonie-inspired food.
A bunch of the original cast showed up, as did the director, Richard Donner (!)
(from left to right)
Dick Donner (director)
Jeff Cohen (Chunk)
Sean Astin (Mikey)
Curtis Hansen (Troy's Dad -- the Richest man in Astoria)
Corey Feldman (Mouth)
...and Joe Pantaliano showed up a few minutes later.
TONS more pics but hope you enjoy these for now...
A few re-creations (done from memory...so please excuse any inaccuracies):
ORV!!!
A few guys from Dreamworks re-built the Jeep to exact specifications.
The Goon Docks were set up as the main meeting place in town. Get your Maps, Merch, and More!
Me in front of the Flavel House (where Mikey's Dad Worked as a Curator)
Mikey's House from the harbor
The driveway up to Mikey's House
Standing where I've always wanted to be.
Data's House (taken from Mikey's porch)
I've waited 25 years to hug this post. Yeah. I'm a nerd.
inside Mikey's living room now:
Me going into THE ATTIC!!
as we came out of Mikey's house there was a Bald Eagle flying overhead.
They had a 'red carpet' premiere for a documentary on the Gonnies, and then showed the movie to the fans.
This is the crowd at the Premiere.
We were lucky enough to be standing right where the backdrop was hung.
(Chunk...25 years later)
Joey Pants!!!
Fratelli Jailbreak 2010!!!
They re-enacted the jailbreak. SO COOL!
These guys drove out from Buffalo.
Outstanding. Just Outstanding.
Me in the Jail Cell from the movie.
Lori standing in front of props from the movie.
80s night out -- awesome costume.
SEALS!
This one is a Goonie for sure.
They put on a concert and bands like The Ataris played, as well as Corey Feldman's band:
Corey as MJ:
Sean Astin came on stage and they sang "Goonies are Good Enuff"
Lori and Corey
Our Rich Stuff (poster + original script cover page) with a few gold coins and doubloons on the corners:
Beauty Shots:
Crescent Beach, Cannon Beach, and beyond:
A salute to the capt'n
Haystack Rock (What Mikey saw thru the coin)
...and 10 minutes later
AND BONUS PICS FROM "POINT BREAK"
(this is where they filmed the end of the movie for "Bells Beach, Australia")
"Death on a stick out there, Mate!"
Hope you enjoyed the pics.

You should still go!
Honestly, the town is so Pro-Goonies it's heartwarming.
But if you want to wait, 6/7 of every year is "GOONIE DAY" so maybe a trip next summer...
