do you happen to have pictures of them facing up?
Good question. I went ahead and arranged them again in the same order, except flipped facing up. As you can see (or not see ) there's no damage visible from the top...

The ones in the second pic marked "4" are from the intake side of cylinder 4, which were the ones with the worst cracks and sunken valves.

replacing the retainers are a lot easier then doing a whole head build, i am happy for you that was caught during the valve adjustment day. i would just buy a good forged set and set it to oem specs and good to go. wish you a good luck
Thanks man!

Awesome post! Thanks Brendan. Sucks it was your car that had the problem tho.

Don't want to keep jumping back and forth on threads but here's a good pic from BrianZ of what they'd look like from the top. The cracks aren't visible from the top however you can see the valve stem tip is dropped by a few mm on the 2nd pic. It's 2nd nature for us to look for this during an adjustment. It's also quite hard to miss when you put the feeler gauge in there and realize you've got a huge gap.
Thanks, Jei! It's ok, I'm just happy to have my car back safely, and that the problem was caught in the shop, instead of being discovered the hard way.

Luckily you had a good team (blacktrax) doing the adjustment/inspection. They just saved you a motor. My AP1 was rebuild under warranty, never over-revd but valve train shot at 32K.

I've recently purchased an S2000 - 2009 UK spec.. and was taken aback upon reading about the Retainers cracking,
As we didnt get the Ap2 and retained the F20C engine it raised concerns and thought I should get mine checked out..so I immediately got on the phone to my local Honda dealership to find out more and if they could investigate it. The guys in service dept know their stuff and he went on to tell me that the UK spec cars did get all of the mechanical upgrades post 2004 onward to whats known in the USA and Japan as AP2.

This includes the reinforced AP2 Valve Retainers, Carbon gear Syncros, reinforced Differential.. just thought I would post this incase there are any other noobs that own a post 2004 S2k

Awesome and fortunate to find this thread revived. Called BlackTrax today to schedule an appointment for upgraded AP2 retainers on the intake side along with new AP1 retainers on the exhaust side for my MY2000. Even with only a hair over 30k miles, I feel like the car is in serious need of a valve adjustment. Might as well go all out while they have it. Hopefully this saves me from what could have been a potential headache down the road.
