Default Oil temp @ cylinder head vs oil pan

I'm currently running a oil temp sensor tapped into my oil drain plug and thinking of relocating it somewhere else. Changing the oil has become somewhat more complicated due to the sensor location.

What is the community's feeling about using the cylinder head port (where the oil pressure sending unit resides)? I've heard there isn't enough flow at the cyl head location and won't get you a proper temp readout.

Also, what are the temperature gradients I can expect at these two locations? I'm currently hitting consistent 250F at the oil pan. What can I expect to read at the cylinder head?

thanks

we used the oil pan on the race car since that should be where the oil is hottest.

WOW 250F ?

With my setup (411hp SC+custom oil cooler) the highest on track temperature I have seen so far was 210f with my temp sensor in the oil pan (sump)

I haven't figured out why I'm running so hot. I'm running a stock AP2 motor, NA. Also using a Setrab 25 row 13x6x2 oil cooler w/Mocal adapter.

250 oil isn't that hot for the track.

I'm a little skeptical about that number... Granted, I haven't measured my own car, but the handful of other racecar drivers I've asked who do run sensors run perhaps 240 and up. Especially with 411 hp!

On the engine dynamometers I test on at work we have oil temp sensors in both the sump and in the oil 'galley'. The difference in temps between these two locations is typically within 1.5 degree C. Not sure if that helps you?

yeah measured in the oil pan and good oil, I wouldn't be worried till over 300. in most cases.

I put my oil temp sending unit at the oil filter using an adapter plate. It works great for me and put the oil pressure sending unit there too. Cannot remember the brand I used though, lots of choices.

Maybe ill see higher temps when summer temps return on a slower track. The 210f i recently saw was after about 25miles off non stop trackday driving in 10c air temp, also the track was quite fast with 2 long straights (120mph). If you look at my avator u can see ive placed the heat exchangers in a way that they dont have an effect on each other. Ive got an alloy radiator, an individual supercharger oil cooler, an engine oil cooler, vented mugen style bonnet, wrapped manifold. Maybe my mods to keep the temps down are helping to reduce oil temp, or the AEM oil temp gauge I have is misreading
