This is notification to anyone insuring an S2000 or any other vehicle for which they are fanatical about.

AAMI are a little different to most other insurers. If you damage your vehicles, you don't take it around and get three quotes etc, you take it to them and they arrange everything for you. Sounds good huh?

What it really means is they play the panel shops off against each other and minimise the level of repair authorised to save them money.

In May last year my car was hit on the rear left quarter by a half asleep Honda Odyssey driver. Scraped the rear left quarter, deformed the lip over the wheel, and damaged the wheel. When the car came back from repairs it looked alright, but on further inspection the lip was still deformed. AAMI acknowledged the fault and told me I could bring it back anytime. Some time later the car was vandalised so I took it in for repairs and requested the original problem be rectified at the same time.

To cut a long story short my car has been back 5 times, and of the 10 months I've had it 2 of those have been in the care of AAMI. Each time it's been in it 's obvious the repair has been done on the 'cheap and nasty'. Bubbles and dirt in the paint, rough edges etc.

In the latest venture I have been informed that AAMI would not authorise the panel beater to disassemble the car to respray. As such the point where the paint work finishes and the roof trim begins is an absolute mess.

I got pretty serious with AAMI this time. I'm having the work done privately, to my satisfaction, and they are footing the bill and paying for my hire car. The owner of this panel shop has an S2000 and an NSX, so I'm fairly sure he's pretty keen on high end Honda's.

I spoke with the panel beater yesterday and they said it will take about a week and a half as it's now almost a complete respray.

I can't wait to get the car back. So then I can take it in for the short block replacement

Just to let you know, I got my S back today.

It had a total respray as a result of the shoddy work performed previously and looks better than showroom.

As I was away last week the panel beater had my car delivered to Honda and it got a new short block, clutch plate, drivers seat leather, and will have the passengers side door panel replaced when the part comes in.

All credit to Prestige Auto Body in Artarmon. The owner Wayne, owns a silver S2000 and they had too others in for work whilst mine was there, so they're not unfamiliar with the car. They kept me up to date with the progress of the work and got me in for inspections at several points. I can recommend them.

AAMI rang today to confirm that they are footing the entire cost of the body work and respray.

If the accident is not your fault, you can choose your own repairer since AAMI won't be forking out the repairs and will be chasing the other party for costs.

It was a known issue amongst early S2000s but this was the first I knew about it.
