3rd Annual Japanese Imports Poker Run for Camp Shawnigan
#31
Dave--I sent some pics to you. Hopefully you can post them for me.
I want to share this with you as the organizer and with all of the participants as contributers to a great cause:
Last weekend Juanita and I were camping at Salmon Point (I recommend it) near Campbell River, and we ran into a friend who has twin daughters, 23 years old, both with Cystic Fibrosis and both confined to wheelchairs. They are as active as they can be even to the point of doing marathons (with Dad pushing the chair). It was inspiring and humbling to see them enjoying life to the fullest to the best of their abilities.
I was talking to the oldest twin (by about 5 minutes) and I told her about the Poker Run. When I mentioned that the event managed to raise about $5000 for Camp Shawnigan, she bacame very excited and emotional. She said that both her and her sister had been there, and it was awesome. It was cool to know that thanks to your efforts, Dave, and thanks to all the participants, a positive difference was made in the lives of those less fortunate.
From the twins to all of you--Thanks!

I provided Camp Shawnigan with a cheque for $5,000.00 less the fees for next years reservations for the Poker run at Mt Washington, which come to $500.00. Up until now I have been putting this up out of pocket and paying myself back and the end of the event. This year I am holding back the $500.00 so the event is self sufficient. Mt Washington provides us with bar staff and catering staff as well as the hall rental and a downpayment for food for only $500.00. Normally the hall rental itself is over $1,000.00 so they do good by us.
At any rate find below a picture of me giving the check over to Verna Write, special events co-ordinator for Camp Shawnigan and the British Columbia Lions Society for Children with Disabilities. Verna has also provided some comment for us. Basically GOOD WORK to all of us! A big thanks from me and from the Lions Society and especially from the kids that will benefit from our work/fun. />
From Verna
Each year we at the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities hold several fundraising events to support the programs and services needed by children with disabilities on Vancouver Island. In addition to our special events, we also have several local groups of people who hold their own fundraisers and chose us as the beneficiaries of their efforts. We are so pleased and honored that Dave Donovan continues to chose us as his Charity of choice and appreciate all the hard work that goes into planning and executing his annual Vancouver Island Poker Run.
We’ve had a good look at Dave’s Vancouver Island Poker Run website and now have an idea of what a Poker Run actually is. It sounds like a lot of people come together to have some fun and to raise money to support a great cause. The cars involved look amazing and I’m sure attract a good deal of attention as they travel up the island. All the proceeds of the Poker Run will go to support Easter Seals Camp Shawnigan where kids with disabilities can spend one week during the summer just being kids. There is no cost to their families and we’ve been told numerous times that they look forward to camp more than Christmas. It is truly a magical place and through the hard work and generosity of people like you, we can keep enriching the lives of these special children.
Thank you so very much for helping us give kids abilities.
All our best,
