While you're right about exposure (in that other illnesses kill more poeple and should get more exposure), you missed a very important point. It's the type of virus that it is.

Flu type viruses have the potential ability to mutate (where malaria and diahorrea are evolved diseases), especially as they pass between species. The main deal with these flus (bird flu, swine flu, etc), is that they can kill HEALTHY people, whereas diahorrea, even if left untreated, would not kill me.

These flu type viruses, are nature's latest attempt to thin out our numbers. Did you guys know we've reached 7 BILLION now? Hardly surprising nature feels a need to do something about it.
