8k for a tranny on a car thats worth 16k is definitely not a good deal.

As most people said, check the FS and WTB forums. Im betting you can find one, certainly for less than 8k

When mine goes, I'm planning to get an AP2 trans. Try pming Dezodwest and find out how he liked his AP2 trans and where he got it from. I recomend that for you too. I would just post a WTB and keep your eyes peeled. Might also try some junk yards. I've used these guys before: http://www.haprecycling.com/ . I might have missed it somewhere, but what kind of noises/problems were you experiencing that led to this diagnosis?? Good luck.

Anyone ever rebuild their own transmission? I'm assuming that there are rebuild kits out there that have all the worn parts needed.

A serious hissing noise (like air hissing almost, or a slight metallic rubbing), and a weird mechanical whirring down as I slowed down in neutral. I'm sure the noise was there despite being in neutral, but my exhaust probably drowned it out.

I looked into the options for rebuilding my own, would save me serious bucks. But there is some serious detail involved with transmissions that require a level of experience that i plain and simply don't have. I would be better off selling it as is (with fair warning of course), and using that money towards a new/used tranny.

As far as an AP2 tranny, what is so great about it that makes it better? I'm assuming that won't affect revving to 9k. Is there anything special I need to make that fit, or is it just purchase > install > drive?

Thanks

It was anytime the car was moving.................If i was in motion above 5mph it would hiss, and get louder and more aggressive as I sped up. That sound was generated by a bearing near the rear of the tranny (based on how I understood them explaining it to me). Below 5mph, it made the weird mechanical whirring noise.

Sorry to hear.

But I remember seeing a member selling a used tranny in the SoCal FS section for a decent price.
