Yes I said over an extension cord.
At first all I could do was say WTF am I gunna do? Where am I going to go right now and how am I going to swing it. Gotta figure out what to do about this.
My day has been consumed with brainstorming, making phone calls, doing online research for a new place, and asking people I know for some advice on AZ landlord/tenant laws. And if push comes to shove I'll at least get my day in court over it.
I never once sat down and thought about how incredibly ****ED this whole situation really is until about an hour ago.
The few of you that have gotten to know me a little here locally I would hope have a somewhat decent opinion of my character and don't consider me to be the type to use the fact that I'm a Veteran as a way to get by.
But I am. And this time I am pulling that card.
I received this notice today:
(All Names, Names of Places, and Locations have been deleted to protect my personal info and anyone involved)
This notice is dated exactly 8 days From the 235th Marines Corps B-day, 7 Days from Veterans Day, and kindly jammed in my door 5 days before Thanksgiving. Not to mention it stemmed from an incident over an extension cord, on Nov 13th. Which just so happened to also be Veterans Day weekend.
What a figurative slap in the face. Honestly they might as well just literally spit in my face.
After first realizing all this I was angry, then I almost cried, now I'm completely beside myself and don't know what to do besides fight back.
I could really use some help. If anyone has any contacts of someone that can provide some type of assistance (the not so expensive kind, I really cant afford thousands of dollars in legal fees). I would really appreciate it.
Not to be a jerk but if hire a Lawyer is the best you have please keep the advice.
I'm aware that hiring a lawyer is something I should do.
It ran right from my slightly cracked garage door to an outlet in an unlocked fully accessible closet that is called a riser room with ONE sign on it that says "RISER ROOM F.D.C."
Apparently according to them was illegal for me to access. I guess I should have known that.
If it was as simple as you peeked in an accessible room and plugged your temporary cord into an outlet -
Call the supervisors's boss. Go up the chain.
You know damn well the low level supervisor is power tripping and will hand out notices so they feel important.
If you want to stay, or at least stay a bit longer til you can find another place - go up the chain and apologize and say you had no idea you were breaking any rule and only needed an outlet for a few minutes to finish a last minute project.
What they want you to do is just say F it and leave....and then you get a notice in the mail that they are suing you in court for the balance of months left on the lease....despite you not living there and their ability to rent to another tenant.
A quick call or 2 up the chain of command can have the issue easily dismissed, as anyone with half a brain will realize you caused no damage and weren't intent on stealing 1.21 gigowatts.
A lawyer could only help if there wasn't a "no admittance" or "no trespassing" sign posted to communicate your need to stay out of that room.
Their side of the story sounds alot worse. Exact details from your side would be good, as accordsing to them it soudns like you intentionally stole power. Thats just the way it loks. Sorry if I offend.
I'm sure they made it sound more ridiculous than it actually was...
But bottom line sounds like you pissed them off by stealing their electricity and possibly the talk you had with the maintenance guy pushed it over the edge.
I guess I better be careful what I plug in the outlet in the ceiling of my rented garage!

Hope it all works out..
I opened the door seen the outlet assumed it was part of the same outlet on the ceiling like yours. I Have the same exact setup. Instead of trying to climb over my car to use the overhead I just ran the cord outa my garage into the door. If I'm stealing electricity somehow. OK I apologize what do I owe? It was not my intention to do so.
Thinking like someone who would be intentionally stealing. Lets drill a hole thru the drywall into the room on the other side of my garage wall. They'll never know because my GOD DAMN extension cord wouldn't be clearly visible coming out my garage at 11:30 in the afternoon. That's a bright idea. How did I ever make it thru the last 6 years of my life being that stupid?????
Really?? The 2 sentences is what set this off. Because that's really all I said. That isn't just a summary that's all I said. I pulled my extension cord in and went back to my buisiness.
I'm not being critical of what your view of this is. I'm being critical as if that was the case.
This has been taken way to far!
Cody, I really don't want to live here anyway but it's a form of stability for now. I was intending on either staying it out till the end and just moving out or breaking my lease as soon as a seat opens for me @ EOD school.
Its almost impossible for me to go anywhere right now. Mainly that car is half torn apart in my garage. It'll take me a good couple weeks to get her back on the ground and movable.
And I'm not going to let them just steam me over like that. This really isn't a real logical cause to kick someone out on. Hope they roll over so you can sue them. I could be wrong but I don't see a judge finding this to be a legitimate case.
I've looked at their website for further information on who her boss is but that lead no where. Seems like anything above her would just turn to the investors of the property, how you get that info is beyond me.
Even if I called the office I'm highly doubting they would give me any info.
Dude I think what they are talking about is the fire riser/ alarm circuit.
Just like in your house the smoke detectors have their own circuit. Sounds like to me that it is their opinion you were tampering w. the circuit and the alarm system that is there to save peoples lives.
