Default Question on checking oil

Dumb question but when checking the oil when the car has sat overnight, should it still read at the top of the XXXX ? Currently mine is at 1X.

I always checked it after it warmed up but have been now looking when its cold as well.

Thanks,

Oil on the S should be checked, according to the owners manual, a few minutes after the engine has been shut off. I usually wait 5 min or so.

It's also important to pull the dipstick out during this time, or you'll get two different readings on each side of the stick.

Yes thats what I have been checking since the last oil change which was nearly 1200 miles ago. I let it sit for a bit after driving and now It shows three X's.

All the X's should be oiled like Sean said, after 5 mins of warm car so oil can drain back to correct levels but still operating temperature.

I've been looking at older threads where others say they lose a bit of oil over an oil change but I don't remember that being this case before.

Maybe its time to get a leakdown test grrr....

I stopped in to the dealer and it is in fact 1/2 qt low after 1400 miles when they last changed the oil. They topped it off and want to log another 1500 miles so they have more "data points" before possibly opening up a claim. Supposedly it is within manufactures spec but the advisor agrees that at this rate, the clicking noise will appear again before the next oil change at the current rate of oil loss.

I asked about a compression and leakdown test and he indicated that the compression more than likely doesn't apply in my case and the leakdown test wont necessarily guarantee where the problem is.

Assuming oil loss continues which I'm 100% sure it will, they will perform the test but in the meantime if I didn't want to wait that long, about how long does it take to perform one of these tests. Has anyone here done one and if so how accurate are they ?

Thanks,

Takes as long as removing spark plugs and threading a line in to each plug tube one at a time.
I don't understand how testing it doesn't apply in your case though.

Yea he was referring to compression itself being a problem. The leakdown test totally applies. I'm going to wager assuming it continues to drink oil that the oil is getting by the rings (blow by) or whatever its called. Everything else seems fine and recently I'd driven a 09 with less than 2000 miles and didnt feel much differece response wise compared to mine with 85,000 miles.

Stupid car

I have a compression tester if you want to come over and do it.
