Letter from a reader:
Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base: Whom do we thank for the morning air show? Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 a.m., a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine our good fortune! Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns' early-bird special? Any response would be appreciated.
The response from Luke AFB:
Regarding "A wake-up call from Luke's jets" (Letters, Thursday): On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m., a perfectly timed four-ship flyby of F-16s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt. Jeremy Fresques. Capt. Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day. At 9 a.m. on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend.
Based on the letter writer's recount of the flyby, and because of the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's flag on behalf of the President of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured.

I got an email about this a week or so ago. It's true.

I live in Goodyear just outside the southern departure pattern for Luke and I LOVE seeing and hearing the F-16s fly by. Every time I hear one I thank them silently for my freedom.
That letter is probably from some bitter old mall walker who just complains so he can have something besides shuffleboard to talk about.
Freedom isn't free...it costs a buck o'five!

well i give it to him for his appology, some times we get cautgh up in the times and forget that there is another world that we tend to forget about that is beyond our realms. Like middle east crisis, global warming, nations that are in famine... ect. We are so tunnel visioned into what is convenient and is so righteous and god given to us that we forget how it came to be and what sacrafices it took to get here and other sacrafices it will take to continue living as we do.
Yes this letter was a wake up call, it was for that citizen that outside our dailey grind, there is a world that is falling apart.

Nice response. That kind of bs letter has got to outrage some people who are putting their lives on the line for us. That was a nice, professional, yet stinging response - my hat is off to the writer - and the officer to whom he was paying respect.
Easy on Wil. He's still recovering from that virus thing.
