Default Vacation in Az.

Hello, from Florida.

My family and I are travelling in Az. for our summer vacation, and we are arriving in Phoenix on Tuesday, June 3rd, mid morning. We are staying at the Grand Canyon from the Wednesday, June 4th until Saturday, June 7th, and then we are going to spend a few days in Sedona, probably travelling on 89A south to Sedona.

I would really like any suggestions for some side trips on the way up to the Canyon. I think we would like to stop somewhere between Phoenix and the Canyon to spend the night and then head up to the Canyon the next day. We will probably be head up I-17 through Flagstaff.

I also would appreciate any suggestions for some intersesting detours on the way to Sedona from the Canyon.

We are pretty much booked up with activities while we are up in the Canyon National Park so I think we have that fairly well covered.

Thanks in advance. Please feel free to send me a P.M. If any S2K folks are in the Orlando area, be sure to send us a message and post something on the forum. We would love to have some guests at our Thursday night meets.

Take care.

Montezuma's castle is pretty good. I can't really think of anything else on the way except for the "Call of the Canyon" hike on 89A between sedona and flagstaff. There is the Jerome ghost town not far west of Sedona on 89A.

Some Sedona tips:
-If you do a jeep tour, take one that does the Broken Arrow trail.
-The Sedona airport has a great breakfast (banana nut bread french toast FTW!). You can also take a scenic plane ride in a really cool bi-plane for about $60 I think. I hear you can tip the pilot extra and ask for them to make the flight extra fun.
-The Coffee Pot is also a great breakfast place, though it is very busy.
-There is an oak creek trout farm on 89A, where you are provided with fishing gear and whatever you catch you pay for and they clean and prepare it. I've never done it, but sounds fun. I hear you like basically instantly catch a fish.
-There are too many good hikes to list
-Slide rock, but I hear the water can get pretty contaminated...

Prescott might be fun to visit. Also spend a little time in Flagstaff.

Thanks. On the way up, I thought about doing a detour out east of Flagstaff to Meteor Crater and spending the night up around Winslow or Flagstaff. Then on the way up to the Canyon, I thought we might hit the Painted Desert. I don't think that we could make it out to the Petrified Forest...just a bit too far out from Flagstaff.

If you go to Winslow make sure you at least take a look at the La Posada hotel. If you can it's also worth staying the night there. You should also get your picture taken "while standing at a corner." There may be some issues with the corner, it was under re-construction last time I was there.

My favorite place to have lunch in Sedona is the Sedona Airport. It is far enough away from the touristy places. You get to see a cozy airport and a decent restaurant - but be prepared to experience the local hyper-privilaged clientel which is Sedona. They haven't a care in the world and will share their experiences without a care of who hears them. It's not a biker crude crowd, it's a rich crude crowd who don't give a shit.
Do the airport.

Who comes to AZ for SUMMER vacation?!? lol

There are some neat little towns west of Flag on old route 66.

You can do petrified forest and meteor crater in one day pretty easily. Lowell observatory in Flagstaff has a cool night viewing tour that's worth checking out.
