Good read.

CLIFF NOTES
An M5Board forum member took his 2007 BMW M5 to the dealer for brakes and fresh oil. Their 20-year-old tech crashed it during a test drive. The dealership's offering him $2500 in parts. The problem? There's $30,000 in damage.

MORAL OF STORY:
Do not take your car to the dealer for any reason.

Unfortunately this is counter to popular perception and these things will keep happening.

Reminds me of the time when I took my Evo to the Mitsu dealer in Tempe for an oil change and caught a kid revving the hell out of my car. Obviously not as bad as the M5 incident, but nonetheless pissed me off a ton.

I actually know a kid (younger than me) who crashed a brand new Camaro at a Chevy dealership and still has his job!

So I stepped out the back door at parts(at a previous dealership.) the next to the lube bays. There was this new lot guy who had never driven stick before trying to back out a 09 si. He pulls it out it fine, but as he starts to go forward he drops the clutch and it slams into the wall right next to the door I was stepping out of. Scared the crap out of me. The damage was minor. Just scrapes to the bumper.
But still scary about who they will hire to work there.

So Boof,

You're saying if your car was still under warranty, you would take it to another shop and pay for repairs just to avoid going to the dealership?

In the case of this M5, it sucks that the guy's M5 was handed over to an entry-level tech that wasn't even legal to drink yet. It sucks even more that the dealer won't man up to the fact that they are fully responsible.

However, everyone must understand the immense pressure dealers are under. They are a for-profit establishment, no doubt about it, but they also have to provide excellent service, no mistakes, and go through literally thousands of cars a week while providing a leigon of reliable people for their workforce to do it. At least, thats what's expected of them. It's damn near impossible, and a lot of dealers crack under the pressure. Sometimes it forces them to hire people who posess the required skills, but are not yet mature enough to get behind the wheel of a $100k car. I'm not condoning what happened, just trying to put some perspective on it. If you take your car to a dealership, demand to know exactly who is handling it and what their qualifications are.

Being a dealer employee of more than 6 years, I have seen some crazy things, and some stupid things, but I've seen our management try to do everything to make it right. But I've also seen them do great things for people, like goodwill engines to people who totally deserve them(not very often but it does happen).

Unfortunately, its usually only the bad stuff that makes the news.

This thing happens all the time.

another one

and the fate of such individuals, as it should be for anyone who does these things.

I don't think anyone condones this behavior. Its like the gyno f$%#ing your wife. Sure, he has to put some fingers there, and this guy had to perhaps move a car or too, but he clearly took it way beyond that.
