Default JDM RX8 Vs JDM S2000?

Hey guys,

I was just wondering how the JDM RX8 compares to the JDM S2000? I know RX8's released in the States were found to have over-rated power figures, and although that hasn't been the case in Australia, the RX8's here are still consistently slower than our AUDM S2000's (which is also the case in the UK & US). Now the only time I've seen a JDM RX8 in action is on Best Motoring/Hot Version shows, and in each and every time its been bettered by the S2K.

I was just wondering however, if there were any Japanese magazine comparos? Listed 0-100km/h, 0-400m times? Anything would be helpful. I'm just in a debate with a friends friend from S'pore who owns an RX8 and thinks the S2K (JDM or otherwise) cannot match it. I Would appreciate solid figures and/or any personal experience/stories. Thanks for your time.

Hi Neo Samurai,
I have straight line raced my S2000 VGS against my friends RX-8 (top of range, 6 spd) and in 1,2,3,4 gears we were neck and neck all the way so I would say that there is not much in it at all in a straight line!

One big difference of course is that the RX-8 sounds like a hair dryer and the S well .......

Cheers
Kye

magazine racing eh?

the thing is that the rx8 here in the u.s. lacks lower end trq than that of the s2k. although the two cars are highly comparable, i would say the s2k has a slight edge over the rx8... that and also, the stock gear ratios on the rx8 are a lot wider than the s2k's gear ratios. tried a google search for the two? for more info?

I've never gone up against an Rx8 myself, but an S2000 friend says they are "so slow" (she basically has a full J's racing conversion, which might explain)

However, I recently saw a DVD of time trials at Tsukuba circuit, where an RX-8 did pretty well (can't remember actual time, though)

The motoring press here seems to write a lot more about the RX-8 than the S2000.

Funnily enough I test drove an RX-8 before an S2000. I really liked the Mazda as I could get the kids in the back, but the Mazda sales guy was hopeless compared to the Honda guy -- he almost seemed like a sale prevention officer. When I went for an S2000 test drive the Honda sales guy got me a car loan authorization on the spot. Looking back, I think the Mazda salesman may have thought "he's a foreigner, can't get him a car loan."

Anyway, I took my MPV in for service a few weeks later, and the Mazda guy was surprised to hear I had bought an S2000 - his loss! Mind you, the guy who had sold me the MPV (who had moved on before I drove the RX-8) was able to get me a car loan......

Kye, Red One...thanks for the information you guys provided. I'm surprised that you ran neck and neck with your friend Kye, but at least it proves in a sense that the J-spec RX8 doesn't 'walk all over' the S2K as this guy claims.

Specialists: I did try a google search, couldn't really find anything. Its the same down here in Australia, in actual fact the tq and hp figures for both cars are near identical, but when I drove the RX8 (extensively mind you) I found that it felt a lot more 'torque-less' than the S2000, and the S2K isn't exactly a torque factory in itself.

As for experiences, never raced one...magazines down here put them behind the S2K in acceleration and road courses too, if that counts for anything.

an RX-8 drew up next to me on the motorway on the way home - round about the kawaskai area. I was on the inside lane, and he road ahead was clear, but he did not overtake. He just sat there.

I must admit I did think about it, but I was listening to Queen/Paul Rodgers - or was it Rush Limbaugh? - (so hard to tell the difference these days)....... anyway, after a while he went ahead

maybe next time....

Wow this thread is still going.

I have a friend who owns an RX8, and he is willing to run...so he says, but he never seems to find the time...

In any case I don't think I should have a problem with an AUDM one, a JDM one would probably fair better though.

I know BM isn't the best source for information, but I have a few clips of the S2K and RX8's running at Tsukuba, and the S2K seems to run around a 1'07.xx laptimes, whereas the RX8 usually runs a very high 1'08.xx but more likely a 1'09.xx laptime. Thats a significant difference, especially on such a relatively short road course.

Halo fellas,
Please allow me a little contribution to the topic "RX8 vs S2000".

In Europe (Greece, in my case), the s2000 is rated at 240ps, whereas the RX8 at 231ps (High power version).
Because it so happens that I admire both cars (well, ok, I adore, no, I WORSHIP the s2000, which I also own) I have been reading carefully all the tests held by Greek magazines relative to these cars. In every case, the RX8 is proved slower than the S2000, although the difference is not astronomical.

Since there is only a slight difference between the two, I was always curious to find out how the RX8 copes against the S2000 in the real worlds of street racing. Well, curiosity may have killed the cat, but in my case, it just proved my expectations right:

I encountered a silver RX8, looking bone-stock (my s2000 is full stock, no mods),on a slightly uphill road near my home. It was going fast and passed by, but I speeded up and caught up with him at the next red light. Although I launched the S2000 from idle (I believe the RX8 driver did the same, or maybe gave some more revs), I just knew that we were going to have a nice little run so I reved all the way to 9000rpm in first - he did the same and we were off!
By the end of the first gear he was only slightly in front of me (so probably he used more revs than idle after all) but as soon as I shifted into second I gained an immediate advantage (that is the benefit of VTEC-zone and shorter gearing). The gap increased further when I shifted from 2nd to 3rd and as soon as I was about to change to 4rth, the guy gave up. Judging by the total performance of the RX8 and by the evolution of this street encounter, I have every reason to believe that the silver RX8 was indeed the high power version (otherwise I wouldn
