Default OT: Apple Ads

The old Apple did two things great; computers and advertising. Seems we're back to the good old days.

BTW, if they don't work for you, get a Mac.

In the old days of mainframes (pre 1980) we used to say that the best computer system would be Honeywell hardware with Burroughs software and IBM marketing.

Now in the modern world of PCs the best computer would be <insert hardware manufacturer> with Apple Mac operating system and Microsoft marketing.

Some things never change.

Mainframes were arguably prevelant till the nineties. As far as a "best computer" goes, it really depends on what the requirement is. As far as operating systems and hardware goes, it's not always as simple as putting brand x with y - there're still interdependencies between the two. And besides, wouldn't Microsoft have moral issues marketing (the current) MacOS, essentially an interpretation of BSD Unix?

Didn't mean to be pedantic!

Anyway, go the Macs

There was talk of Apple including special chips in the Intel Macs that OSX would look for and only run if it was present, thus preventing OSX for Intel being installed on any old PC.

Anyone know if this is true?

I still don't understand this move unless Apple make more money on their hardware than they would on sales of OSX.

Ahhh the old Burroughs 5900... cut my theeth writing Cobol on one of those... then had to re-learn RPGIII to recompile some progs when the bank changed to the Unisys A6s in '88.

Dang, i feel old now... It feels like it was just yesterday that I first charged someone to remove viruses from their computers.. it was the summer of '86.

Not true. The latest OSX has been made to run on dell laptops. But they probably make more money on the hardware as OSX is only $149 (off the shelf) as opposed to Windows XPs $400+ (off the shelf).

We had a similar saying about the GUI interface. Xerox invented it, Apple made it work, Microsoft made all the money.
