Test drove a C63
The ESP on AMG car is a joke when you don't need it yet is very useful when you least expect it. All AMG these days have enough torque to smoke the rear tyres in 2nd gears but the drive by wire, ECU restriction programs and esp just take all of the fun away. On top of that the factory tyres are not as grippy as the semislick used in the M series. It's fairly annoying to drive with the ESP on. I nearly always switch it off on my C32 unless the road is too wet.
The ESP works well during a spin though. On the track I could not loose control of the c32 at all despite how hard I try. I can force it into oversteer and power orversteer with the ESP off but it will not go any further than that. It is fairly boring to drive on the track with the helmet on. I could not get any feed back at all and had to roll down the window to hear the tyre screech around corners
With shonky tyres it was still equally as quick as the fastest M3 on the day
Anyway, I lost control of the car in the wet, at a traffic light, once and it just cutted power, released certain brakes and the car pulled to a stop at 120-130 degrees. Without the EPS it would have been a written off at that speed.
Blackie, the computer can be flashed to adjust or remove restrictions in the torque based throttle map. The car is much more fun to drive with this off. I drove a flashed CLK63 and it was a lot of fun. Even with semislick tyres, it was difficult not to smoke the tyres.

Yeah I'm sure it would need some adjustment to make it agreeable. The c32 is nice though especially in black. Looks like a fitted Armani suit.
Tak, the only point of the test drive is exactly that. And maybe others here would relate or provide other insights. If it happens to be pretty special and within my spending limit then I could he tempted to put an order down. If not then I would at the very least have had some fun. Beats looking at a computer spreadsheet on a wednesday afternoon.

so is that it? what was the point of the test drive? something else your thinking of?

I try to test drive cars that I'm interested in to kill the curiosity!

I just assumed you would then go and try a M3 for your own comparison as opposed to reading what the car mags have to say.
Maybe next wednesday eh?

they've tested both on top gear, I just remember the c63 being a bit of a handful for Clarkson with the ESP off. It's a shame that it's so intrusive...but then again, who are these cars really targeted towards???
I must say it's a bit unfair to test the C63 with stock street tyres with the M3 in semislick
It will also be a handful to run the car in dyno mode as well.
Ahh I would love to test drive the new M3 but I feel bad for wasting the salesperson's time if I don't have a genuine interest in purchasing. The only reason the C63 came up was because my friend asked me if I was interested as the dealership had the car for a day only so it was limited to bookings. Like Taaxed said, it kills the curiosity and might be a revelation for a possible purchase if funds permit. I've got a keen eye on a used Cayman S but prices are still a little high for me to make a comfortable upgrade. And no I haven't even driven one yet. But the prospect of one makes me wet my pants. We all have a "next" car.
