Default Coming to Aussie

Hi, it's been a while since I've been online here, looks like things are still progressing extrememly well and I'm glad to see that everybody is still enjoying the best car in the world!! I still miss mine and freak out when I see one.

I'm going to be in Sydney on April 18th and am hoping to make a trip up the coast to Cairns and also (hopefully) rent a motorcycle and ride from syndey to Melbourne (or can you suggest a better, more scenic, fun route? my goal is to get some bike time) ... maybe even get some S2K time if possible... god I miss that car

I have the books and have checked the net.. wanted to get an Aussie perspective on the things to check out. I am in Aussie for at least a month, maybe 2, with no fixed itinerary.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Feisal

Hi Feisal, do you have any fixed dates to be in certain places? That is, do you have pre-booked accomodation for precise dates?

The reason for asking is that the period you will be here is our fall. If you're planning to go motorcycling you'll run into some cooler weather as you head south (towards Melbourne).

If you head north from Sydney you'll get just about perfect weather for bikes.

If you have some particular reason for coming to Melbourne and you want to do it on a bike, better to do it early in your trip (late April) whilst the weather is still good. If you leave it till late May/early June there's a chance that you could strike some unpleasant riding conditions.

If you want to find some winding mountain roads (bike heaven) there are certainly some very good ones between Sydney & Melbourne if you divert away from the main route (Hume Highway).

If you take the bike north from Sydney there's still some good bike roads but just not as many as if you head south. If you're really adventurous (and strong) you could take the long ride from Sydney to Cairns - a mere 2000 miles.

Anyway, let us know a bit more about what you'd like to do and we can help you with more specific information about places & routes. Theres a few ex & current bikers amongst the S2000 ranks.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I have no fixed dates..the only accomodation that is booked is my first 3 days so that I can at least get my bearings.. my original plan was to ride to Cairns from Sydney, but I now only have a month in Aussie (Unless I extend my trip) so I figured Melbourne might be the best bet. If you have any other suggestions... also, are there places to rent bikes, or should I buy one and then sell it? not sure if that's worthwhile for the 2 weeks I'll be using it... unless I go to Cairns, in which case I'll plan on about a month and a half to do the trip (lots of stops along the way)

Hey Skitzo!
Well welcome to Australia when you come.. Melbourne's weather atm is all over the place.. by the time you come down it might be freezing.. not trying to put you off or anything.. just wanted you to get the most out of your holiday!. So maybe northern Australia is your best bet..
But if you do decide to come down we should organise a s2000 cruise and get you to come along! You'll get to see Victoria and be reunited with an s2k!.. (two birds one stone!)

I'm planning to go to Canada in September for a month so i might have to ask you the same questions too!

Let us know what you're gonna decide!

Melbourne to Sydney is an easy day's ride by bike.

Melbourne to Cairns is 4 - 5 days by bike, I did it on a GPZ1100 23 years ago, the long way up (inland via Mt Isa) and the short way back (down the coast).

You will NOT be able to do a one way bike rental so I suggest you buy down South and sell up North (bikes are cheaper down South).

just getting my bearings around town, but am most def interested in coming on a ride if you guys get one going... that would bring back some memories... I'll take some pics back for the boys back home... be great to see how the cars perform down here (if it's any different).

I did pick up a mobile phone here, so pls pm me and we can trade numbers if you don't mind meeting up with one of dem damn canadians eh!

If you need help with planning an interesting route go to

http://www.hsccv.org.au/ and click on "Where to Drive".

You need to read that article in conjunction with a map.

If you were just cruising down the Hume Highway you could do it in only one day, but if you want to take in the more interesting roads (both in NSW & Vic) then I suggest you plan an overnight stop in Albury.

Anyway, post here again if you need any "local" advice.
