Got my JDM Navi Bezel, now what?

Hi,

Just need someone to explain how I get a GPS system in my car...rather than the portable GPS like Navman.

I got my JDM Navigation bezel, but looking for a screen and GPS navigation system to put in the bezel.........what GPS system is available in Aust with updated Aus maps?

Is it simply getting a GPS system and a screenthat will fit within the bezel?

Thanks for your assistance.

see AusS2000's thread on this exact same topic . He's got a detailed install on it , also Replicah has a thread on it too :)

As Vuey says, first thing to do is READ!

https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=385059

and no skipping pages, start from the beginning. :)

It is not an easy task before you my son. You will need a stiff tool and a steady hand .... ooops, wrong thread! :D

Seriously, you will have to cut a huge hole in your dash, try and find a screen that will fit in the bezel, try and mount the screen in the bezel, try and mount the screen and bezel in the dash. Multiple uses of the word "try" are deliberate.

Then for Sat Nav you will need a computer to run it with appropriate software.

You will not find a complete Sat Nav touch screen system that fits into the JDM bezel and just drops into the car.

I don't know about that. The bezel is approximately double-DIN so the Pioneer or Eclipse units may fit. Might need some modifications under the dash but that's the fun of it.

If you go the Carputer route then the only Aus Nav software I found is Co-Pilot Live 8. Here's a pic of it running in XP on a Mac Mini:

BTW, I noticed a lot of "What do I do now?" type questions on this subject. What you have to keep in mind is that this is entirely custom and that if you're the sort of person who reads all the instruction before assembly it may not be for you.

That said, one of the areas that had me perplexed was finding the exact spot to cut the dash. I made up a fibreglass mould of the front of the bezel so I could find where it fitted flush with the dash. Worked perfectly. Anybody who wants it is welcome to it.

Without having done this mod myself, but having worked on plenty of DIY/electronic/audio/video mods on cars I would be looking at it this way:

Pick your needs

* GPS Navigation System (is this your need or do you just want it as a nice to have?)
* Car Audio/Video
* Integrated into dash or removable

Based on that, I would look at what you're comforable with

* Would you cut the dash yourself?
* Do you have basic wiring understanding?
* Do you have any resources to help you if things go wrong
* Are you on a tight budget (incase things go wrong and you need to have it professionally done/completed)

Then I would look at the possible solutions

* Carputer (almost full pc capability in your car)
* Dedicated Nav system (like the Pioneer)
* Portable/Removable device (e.g TomTom)

And analyse the pros and cons for each (if you don't know which way to go already).

In the end, remember that what you get is usually factored by time, cost and ability.

We could probably help you a little more if you gave us some information on the above requirements.

But definately... in the end, this is not a plug and play solution... and whenever you are making something customised, you need to be prepared to go through with it till the end...

burn it..

or else have some fun and experiment!

i'm in the middle of the process and well.. yeah as aus said.. there's no real guide to it..

if you have the cash i would go the eclipse..

have a look at aus' or my threads.. or check out the dash cutters club in the electronics forum.

good luck!

Where are you Wooey? If you're in Sydney I'd be happy to cut your dash. Just don't be shocked by my maniacal grin.

Hi Aus,

Yes I am in Sydney........thanks you for your offer to cut my dash.

However, I need some time to study what system I will get for the GPS.

I'll keep you posted.
