2006 F1 Qualifying
how about disussTING
i agree with your reprint in that theres so many vairables to this form of qualifying. whos saving their engine, fuel loads, can tires be changed from qualifying to race ? i'm on yhe west coast and try to watch the f1 live which is early am. so i'll sit there with my coffee trying to figure out how this works. rest assure it will be modified as the season progresses. i did not mind last years format.

I think it will be better than ever. There is no way it will be as boring as single car and we won't have "Minardi's" getting in the way of a hot lap in the last 2 minutes of a session to keep somebody off pole in open session.
It will be better in every way as far as I'm concerned.
How about seeing that driver for ONE hot lap
How would this be any different than in the past? again
Whoever gets into the top ten or on pole was definitely faster than the first group eliminated at the given time. It's like the playoffs, you don't have to score more points every consecutive game, just be able to beat your competitors on that day.

1) How'd you like to be a fan that pays an arm and a leg to go to qualifying and you see your favourite driver for 15 minutes? Nice, isn't it?

2) What happens if no cars go out for the first half hour? Or even 7 cars?

3) F1 seems to forget that it occasionally rains. How about this situation that contradicts what Max said about the public knowing "who is the fastest driver"?
I can see where they are trying to weed out the Minardis.
Feels like an over-reaction. But on the plus-side you may get to see your favorite qualify three times! I suppose my biggest objection is why not let them keep their fastest times, even if set in an earlier session?

I think it's a cool way to do things.
As l8brakr said, it's a damn sight more interesting than one lap only..
Perhaps they require each car to turn at least one full, timed lap. But I have the feeling that even if that isn't the case, things will take care of themselves. If the three slowest teams field their six cars and nobody else does, then Ferrari, McLaren, Honda, et al are limited to 7th as their best possible starting position. Why would they do that to themselves?
Incorrect, there's no contradiction. By advancing to round two, the other sixteen cars already demonstrated they're faster than the eliminated six. If it happens to rain in the second round, hey, every car is lapping under the same conditions so it's a very clear indication of who's faster. Again like l8brakr said, it doesn't matter that the absolute times of the following sessions are any slower. If a football team wins the Superbowl with a 3-0 score, are they considered worse than a team eliminated 56-45?
Here are the fuel regulations for qualifying:
In the first two 15-minute sessions, cars may run any fuel load and drivers knocked out after those sessions may refuel ahead of the race. However, the top-ten drivers must begin the final 20-minute session with the fuel load on which they plan to start the race. They will be weighed before they leave the pits, and whatever fuel they use in the 20 minutes may be replaced at the end of the session.
For the first two rounds, it's just flat-out which car+driver is fastest. In the third rounds, it's about who's fastest in race trim. This encourages the teams to run extra laps - start with race fuel, run as much as possible with an extra-rich setting, then do an all-out lap in the hopes of getting pole. We're guaranteed to see the top ten cars run lots of laps.

^Thanks Elistan
Considering the fuel rules it will be even better IMO. 1st & 2nd rounds you are going to see the cars go out on light loads and put in a couple laps to get the tires hot and do a flyer (ie. see who is the outright fastest) and do this at least twice. Then you will have the "fastest" out of those sessions on track for the maximum amount of time because we all know the more fuel you can burn the faster you will be at the end of the session. So the longer you're out the more fuel you can have to start the race and still get down to low fuel loads to be quickest.
I think it is going to be a great year!!
