Default da Matta hits a deer in practice

Check it: The Story

How does this happen? Those stewards are trained to identify debris on the track but can't wave a flag for a deer? I want answers!!! More importantly though, I want video!!! that da Matta is OK

Umm, did you read the whole article? Going in for surgery to remove a subdural hematoma is far far from being ok...

Da Matta is far from being OK unless you consider a major brain operation OK.

Debris is usually seen falling off a car, and it just sits there.

Deer jump out from the side of the track and leap right into the path of the car.

Don't be an idiot blaming the flaggers for something they can't control.

They should set up a tall fence around the perimeter...it's as simple as that. I'm surprised there's even a possiblity of this happening. The track should be secure from wayward animals

Now that wasn't necessary.

I wasn't blaming the flaggers, I was wondering simply why they would not have caught something like this (with them being one of the last lines of defense for dangerous track situations).

I WOULD look closer at Road America's precautions taken to prevent something like this from happening (ie deer fences).

It's tough. You'd have to have a pretty tall fence to keep the deer out... And wayward animals are pretty common on racetracks. Rabbits run across all the time.. and there's even the occasional cobra to deal with.

It sounded like you were. I've been a flagger, it's a tough job. You do your best, but you can't control everything.

It's really hard to keep deer out of attractive areas. I've been at the track (not Road America) when it had to be shut down because deer got in. The fact that it happens occasionally doesn't necessarily mean anyone was negligent. if it happens all the time, then that means somebody needs to do something about it.

Accidents do happen.
