I'm like totally not surprised...
Although this is not a signed contract with Renault, I suspect that will be coming soon.
Now silly season can kick into high gear because the McCheaters need a new driver.

[b]F1: Alonso Signs 3-Year Letter of Intent with Renault ???

Fernando Alonso has signed a letter of intent to rejoin Renault starting next January (2008), according to emerging reports. Germany's Bild newspaper said the document is the precursor to a definitive three-year contract (2008-2010), but only if the reigning world champion can successfully negotiate an end to his current McLaren deal. Alonso, 26, is currently under contract to McLaren also for 2008, with an option to continue in 2009.
The news of Alonso's likely return to Renault follows reports that Toyota was offering the Spaniard a record retainer to switch to the Japanese giant for 2008. The German magazine Sport Bild said the Cologne based team was prepared to fork out (US) $150 million for a three year deal; a comparable amount of money to that earned by Michael Schumacher at Ferrari towards the end of his illustrious career.

There is a really quick way to ensure that FA is able to get out of his contract with McLaren.....crash out Hamilton on lap 1.
It has to be a real burn to McLaren. They need team players but they also want the best drivers.
I always said he'd go back to Renault. He can claim such a chunk of their success, given two strong seasons and how far they fell when he left. I have no idea how much credit to give Alonso. I thought F1 cars had more instrumentation and simulation so driver set-up value was minimized?
A recent issue of Race Tech magazine had a killer article on Kinetic Energy Recovery (KER), as being pushed by Max. That article showed just how detailed the simulation end of the sport is. I was seriously impressed by how much fun those engineers have in sim space.

I just read, Dennis offered Alonso to Williams in exchange for Rosberg. Frank Williams turned the offer down. Not surprised and the most likely candidate to replace Alonso, will be Kovalainen now..
If NR goes to McLaren and FA goes back to Renault
we know GF is out but I do not see FW wanting HK, but I could see him wanting NP as he would lose 1 son from a former Williams WDC and gain the son from another former Williams WDC.
I also think Flav knows HK ability but NP has only been seen in testingh, HK is a better choice right now for Flav
