Default New York GP

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone says he is working on a deal to have a grand prix in New York by 2012.

"I'm trying to do it for 2012," Ecclestone told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"It would be in front of Manhattan, in New Jersey, with the skyscrapers in the background, 15 minutes from the heart of New York to the circuit, it would be marvellous."

The United States has no Formula 1 race now, after Indianapolis was dropped from the calendar following the 2007 race.

Ecclestone also said he was hoping to have a grand prix in Rome too, but made it clear that Monza was not under threat.

"I hope we'll have it, it would be nice," he said. "The promoters seem resolute. I repeat once again that there's never been the intention of taking Monza off the calendar, and alternating hasn't even been considered.

"Monza is Monza and it's the venue of the Italian GP. Rome will be something else."

That would be great but somehow doubt it would happen.

I have NEVER been to a race set in a city on their streets that I enjoyed, or could see very much, and no, I have not been to Monaco, but Monaco is different, it's our history.

Bernie is an asss, he does not care about the fans, and he does not care about the US market.

If this is indeed being considered, I believe it is a mistake. GPs should reflect the country in which they take place, and a city race does not reflect US motorsport. US motorsport is about high speed and big power (think Indy, Dayton, bonneville, and drag racing). F1 should go back to Indy or another oval/road course maintained by NASCAR. That's the character of US racing, love it or hate it.

Watkins Glen would be awesome considering the history associated with it. It'd be delightful to see an F1 car screaming up the esses on to the back straight and then have them go through the bus stop

^ and that sadly enough will never happen as there is just not enough infrastructure to support a modern F1 race in this lovely little village
