Points system in F1
I have hated the "new" points system from the day it was introduced, because it made winning a race less important. This point system was put in place to keep the field close to MS and now they are starting to figure out it doesn't work...
Why Schumacher is in trouble in the title race
Fernando Alonso's win in Monte Carlo is a significant moment because it takes the Spaniard to 21 points ahead in the Drivers' World Championship. That does not seem like an insurmountable amount but with modern levels of reliability and the current points system, Fernando Alonso can now afford to finish second at every race and if Michael wins every race Fernando will only lose the title at the final round of the World Championship in Brazil. That would give Michael 13 wins and Alonso four but the pair would be separated by only one point! If nothing else this calls into question the logic of the current points system.
How can a WC have less wins, by a mile, than the #2 driver and still be WC???????

i agree but..
Under old points MS would be trailing by 23!!!
FA 58
MS 35
And your also figuring FA will finish 2nd rest of year, and MS will WIN rest of year
Both are a dream
If your theory held true however, MS wouldnt take over lead til finish at Hungary and be leading by 1 point
I think points should be for 8 spots but with this break down

I am not figuring FA will finish 2nd and MS first...I am hoping for it, just like you hope for a Honda win...

What about bonus points for qualifying?? But they would definitely have to scrap the whole fuel loads during the final qualifying format idea...
NASCAR goes crazy with points for this and point sfor than. I'm not saying F1 should go bonkers with tons of points, but I believe pole and fastest lap during the race should be good for one point each. Let's make it interesting.
Agreed. 1 for fastest lap and 1 for pole. This will at least encourage the racers to give it their all. I'm kinda tired of seeing these guys go out there and race at 90% because he wants to win the championship and settles for 2nd-5th positions...
