I doubt they are mandated in lower forms of open wheel racing (i.e. F2, GP2, Atlantics, Indy Lights, etc). They are mandatory for F1 and Indycars thought.

Tragic accident indeed.

Formula 2 cars conform to FIA standards, which means wheel tethers are mandated. Nothing works 100% of the time though. Every now and then you'll still see a wheel bouncing away from an F1 car.

The world will never know if Henry would have lived up to his fathers reputation. A young life has sadly been taken away. RIP Henry.

Just saw the video of the crash, strangely reminiscent of Senna's death. The tire did not appear to have hit too hard but must have caught the right angle to cause the problem.

Very sad.

When you're going 120mph and your head hit something that weighs 35 to 40 pounds, unless it literally skimmed off your head, you're not going to be liking the results very much.
