Ferrari, Renault Cars Even - Tires to Decide Championship
The outcome of the 2006 championship will be decided on tyre performance, according to Renault's Pat Symonds.
The engineering chief, whose blue and yellow camp is 21 and 17 points ahead of Ferrari in the constructors' and drivers' standings, admitted to 'AS' in Spain that Ferrari and Renault are 'very even' in terms of the actual cars.
''The difference (from now on) will be all about the effectiveness of the tyres,'' the Briton was quoted as saying.
Renault's previously dominant supplier, Michelin, is pulling out of the sport in a little more than three months, while Bridgestone - after Michael Schumacher's back to back wins - is now beginning to dominate.
Indeed, Symonds thinks Fernando Alonso was lucky to finish second - not third - at Magny Cours, so it looking forward to yet another evolution of the V8 engine that will debut in Giancarlo Fisichella's car at Hockenheim.
''It is not necessarily an increase in power,'' Symonds insisted, ''but it is an improvement in the driveability of the engine.''
Both Renault and Ferrari are planning more bodywork upgrades for the next few races, leading Symonds to believe that defending its lead is not the best strategy for his team.
He remarked: ''Last year we won because we had better reliability than McLaren, but this year we have got to go for speed.''
Renault realize they are not going to be able to survive on reliability alone this year as Ferrari is more reliable than Renault. This will make the remainder of this season very interesting imo!

Well that can be easily remedied if the Renault's were quick enough to get ahead of the Ferraris!
You have to be already ahead of someone to become a "mobile chicane"....so if FA is not quick enough to get in front or around the SECOND Ferrari driver - well.....
