Default travel to canada

I know I shouldn't be checking into this 4 weeks until the race, but do I need a passport to cross into and out of Canada? The U.S. department of state tells me I only need a drivers license and birth certificate if I am driving there. Does anyone have experience with this issue? Thanks!

I've made 8 trips to the US in the last 2 months. If you're flying you HAVE to have a passport.

If you're driving, a DL and another piece of photo ID will get you in and out.

Don't sweat it....and don't look suspicious!

Exactly.

The state department has been so overwhelmed with passport applications they have had to roll back the manditory passport for land crossings several times.

And for people like me who have an application pending, holy crap are they slow in issueing a passport...

Assuming you're a US citizen and driving, you're fine without a passport until June/09:

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

The last time I crossed into the US I was asked my citizenship, but was not asked to provide ID in any form.

There are some circumstances under which you might be required to produce more information.....for instance if you were born outside of the US or Canada...

Currently crossing on land does not require a passport but will be the case soon.

I've noticed that the border guards like the new passports with the bar codes because they simply scan them in....and, in general, it makes their life easier....and hence your's too. So, I would get a passport as soon as possible to avoid future grief.

Reijo (grew up in Canada - not born there - and living in California....with plenty of recent border crossings over the last couple of years)
