Curious - where does your Evo build rank amongst the cars you listed above? I was following that build originally.

I was soooooooo close to buying a super clean 9RS instead of this AP2. But partially was afraid that no Evo would live up to how I remember my 9MR, even if the budget would be larger this time. |
Ahhh gotcha. I would've been equally happy following the progress of a new Evo build. I always wanted an Evo 9, but more difficult as they were never sold in Canada.

Even if you can get an Evo 8 it would be killer. They just drive like nothing else. Although I do really prefer the low slung sports car feel which you’ll never get with one. That’s the only real drawback for me. Otherwise they are peak “shitbox that drives like a $100k car” which is a vibe I really like lol. |
A couple of quick updates. I am continuing to sprinkle a few more parts here and there on the car with the attempt to bring make it punchier and sharper, but while still being tolerable and “under the radar” on the surface.
Spoon Throttle Body I want to squeeze some extra power out of the car while remaining N/A, and not falling into the spiral of “built block” or “crazy induction setups”. As a result I picked this up - obviously it won’t make some huge difference but a few extra horses can’t hurt, and the finish sure is nice. You can get similar options from SOS, Toda and ASM but I chose Spoon. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...e70037ede.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...5d51b324a.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...b7efb4cf3.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...710b74ebb.jpeg ASM Throttle Spacer May as well add this while we are here right? I’m not boring the manifold to match the TB outlet so this has a slight taper to create a better transition between the TB and manifold inlet. I have no expectations of this doing much but it completes the pairing well. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...721e163ee.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...0f2674ddd.jpeg In other news, I added an HFC back to my exhaust which makes the SSM sound way better. It’s quieter for sure but now doesn’t have nearly the rasp problem it had with the test pipe when letting off the gas at higher RPM. My single largest problem with the car now is the OEM clutch. I really dislike how soft it is and how I have to pace my shifts to keep the clutch from slipping at higher RPM. It is at odds with how the rest of the car, which feels sharp and snappy. That will need to be fixed sometime soon…. |
Maybe look into an AP1 clutch slave cylinder to get rid of the AP2 clutch delay valve

time for another Ojisama clutch and lightweight flywheel ;)

The leaders are something like a Spoon clutch paired with a lighter flywheel or something with a metal disc. I really like a sharp feeling clutch so am currently leaning towards something that does not have an organic disc. |
Progress on the clutch front. I have 2 options in front of me:
More comfort oriented: - Spoon Pressure Plate which is OEM with 30% more clamp load - Spoon disc, which who knows how it differs from OEM. Even has the Honda and FCC stamps - Toda flywheel. About 8 pounds https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...d6dac9e3c.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...299e87d58.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...f0fffaf6e.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...59620e16c.jpeg More aggressive: - ORC 309 D - Dampened metallic disc, 200mm diameter - Light flywheel https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...bd341f84b.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...5f74cdba4.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...4bbe6c2cc.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...bd9bd8b2b.jpeg At this point in time I am leaning more towards the ORC. I certainly do not need the capacity, but I really dislike the feel of the OE clutch and want something with a lighter and sharper feel when shifting or taking off from a stop. Will think on it more and decide eventually. |
Strange thing that you dislike the factory clutch. Its so good.
Maybe you just disliked the feel of the AP2 flywheel, which is understandable. The ORC looks a lot like the Exedy Hyper single I used to have. It was a bad idea overall. Great on the race track....but that's it. Really annoying to drive, way too much clamp load (stressing the engine's crank bearings for no reason), and a very abbreviated life span. I went back to stock and I couldn't be happier. Just sharing my experience. Your experience may vary |
^Agreed. Still on my stock OEM ap2 clutch with CDV still in place. I get how people might not like the way it feels, but i'm pretty sure that's why my diff, trans, and clutch are still all original after 114k miles - with 100 track days on it. That said, I bought an AP1 flywheel for $70 bucks used around 8 years ago. I've been waiting for my clutch needing replacing to install it. Haven't gotten there yet. LOL.

As a note on my preferences, I have driven an S2k with an Exedy hyper single and I like the feel of that clutch a lot. Would I want to daily it? No way. But for something I drive for fun and occasionally to work? Definitely. |
I have nothing bad to say about the Ohlins that are currently on the AP2, but I wanted to try something different. And as I admitted before I am a huge fan of anything Endless. Enter these:
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...2f399682c.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...bea739716.jpeg To be be completely honest, I am not expecting some sort of revelation over the Ohlins. Given my driving and skill level I may not even notice a difference at all. But I still wanted to try a set of Functions, and their latest damper seems to be getting very good reviews in Japan. A lot of people just say they ordered Functions but Endless offers a pretty wide variety of options. These are Function.coms, and the .com stands for custom order made. To order these you fill out a sheet describing everything on your car, what you like about your current suspension, what type of driving you do, what options you are willing to spec, etc. Endless then builds a set of coilovers to meet your spec. My spec is as follows:
Now enjoy some 100% made in Japan goodness. Endless knows how to do fit and finish, and these are no exception. I went overboard researching all the different options of Functions so ask away if you have questions on what is available. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...5ddbc4f1d.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...0e24242b2.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...bb8414a01.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...cb98e4b8c.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...0e51652b6.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...13a33c908.jpeg |
Those are sexy as ****. The only question I have is how much a set of those costs lmfao.
|
Damn those look MEGA!
|
1. How much did they cost?
2. How long did it take to build/receive? Cannot wait for your driving impressions, they look amazing! I had a set of Functions Basics on my old DA Integra and although I didn't set them properly, they felt quite amazing for being dumb specs (12/16 or something) |

The 2 way + remote canister upgrade was a significant part of the total, so if you were to replicate everything but keep the shock as a single adjustable it would be a lot cheaper. |
Appreciate posts like these trying less well-known JDM parts and documenting them. Great stuff.
|
No new parts for a while but finally got time to wash the car and appreciate it a little bit. I love how straightforward the car looks now and do not want to ruin that. But if you know me it is always a battle to not go too overboard.
