Ruut's LS powered widebody build

I have a 04 that I bought as a rolling chassis. I decided to build it into a LS1 powered Widebody street legal race car.

Will do! I should have the steel back from the machine shop for the diff. I'm putting a built 2010 Camaro diff with 3:73 richmond gears. I talked to driveshaft shop about custom axles and they are on standby awaiting my measurements. I will post up some pics of the diff. The mount should be a new part available from Import Muscle soon.

Wheels are custom SSRs.
18x10 et35 front with 295/30/18 r888s
18x12 et24 rears with 335/30/18 r888s

I also have the T-sport wide body coming from ilovebodykits.com. It should be here in a week or so.

It's either 35 or 50mm but I may have to add fenders to it. I like the J's but not sure how over fenders will look added to a widebody. I will have to play it as it goes. The widebody will be delivered tomorrow. I just made the delivery appointment with the shipping company.

ruut 05-16-2013 06:33 AM

So, Everyone has evaluated the tires and come to the conclusion that I am some sort of meat fanatic, while this is true I have chosen the tire sizes for a reason. I will lay out some specs for the build to explain.

Goal weight for the car is 2380 lbs(with cage).
Estimated specs for the current engine. 425-450 hp and 430-450 tq.

It will more than likely have a SC on it in the next year or so and be at 650ish HP. The car is being built for track days and Autox. The track and Autox set up is 18x10.5 et 37 with 315/30/18 Hoosioer A6s Square. The only down side to the project is the width but I feel like it ls a good set up based on other S2ks I have set up with stock power plants.

I know a lot of people feel a LS swap S is blasphemy but this car was in a light wreck and I felt that is was a proper candidate for such a project. It really is just to build a S that fits in the WTF is that category. I had a MY00 prior to this project and I loved the car but wanted something a bit on the radical side just to see how far I could take it and still have usable power.

This the car I had before this project.

Drive shaftshop is building my axles and driveshaft this week. They are doing prototype axles for us to test. They are supposed to be good for 600HP. Wiring and plumbing working going on tomorrow. Should be ready to fire this thing up in the next week or so.

ruut 06-23-2013 05:08 PM

Made a good bit of progress today! Engine is back out and engine bay mods are continuing. Should be ready for the engine to go back in in a couple of days.

Next Sunday should work fine. I will keep you posted.

It came from a 98 WS6. :) It has a 231/231 cam and the heads have been worked a bit. I bought the whole car from a guy as an unfinished project. The engine has 0 miles on it. I kept all the parts I wanted and sold the chassis. I have a LS6 intake and LS3 injectors for it too. I will do some more to it as I go. It will probably never be truly finished.

DownSouthWS6 06-24-2013 11:54 AM

Nice. As soon as I bought my S2k everyone asked me if I was going to put the motor from my T/A in it haha. You're probably close to 400 rwhp (not sure which heads you've got). I'm assuming you went with the T56 trans?

Yeah, it has the T56 from the WS6. I bought a 2010 Camaro Diff with richmond 3:73 gears and poly bushings. looking for 385-425HP and a completed weight of 2300lbs.

My T/A is making 350rwhp/350rwtq with the stock cam and heads. If you got a set of ported/polished LS6 or 5.3 heads you'd be at 425 no problem, though the 853's that you've got now (I'm assuming) could get you there too. That's gonna be a sick S2k.

Do you have headers or any other upgrades?

As far as exhaust I've got long tube headers, off-road X-pipe (no cats), and 3" dual pipes running through race-bullet mufflers. On the intake side I've got a lid and baffle (an LS1's version of a CAI) and an LS6 manifold off an '02 Z28. And it was dyno tuned. I also did all of the "free mods" but im skeptical to whether or not any of those made a difference. Not sure a true dual exhaust would fit under a S2k, though that'd be sweet, but LS1 f-bodies came stock with Y-pipes and I'm pretty sure you get a little more low end torque with a Y.

Oh and I guess it's worth mentioning, but if it hasn't already been done, make sure you tune out the "skip shift" feature for the T56. That shit is annoying. It'll lock you out of every gear but 4th when shifting out of 1st at a certain rpm range.

I'm considering a S/C LS1 with 180 headers in a year or so just for the WTF factor!I'm curious what the car would be like with 600hp and Tons of torgue! :surprised:

d-bo 06-26-2013 02:39 PM

i am debating on whether to buy the import muscle kit or use tom's poly mounts to the stock subframe (which i kind of like better)

do you think there is enough room with those solid mounts to run flipped truck headers and route the exhaust from a turbo Over the mounts and back to the exhaust? (both sides, or single)

the other idea i had was just flipped headers , twin turbo and do the exhaust out of the hood.

my car won't be as radical as yours body-wise but i hope it is just as cool :p

It will be tight but I think you could pull it off. I will look at mine and see what options I see. I have considered Turbo but due to the tight space and the fact I like the torque you get from a whipple charger, I'm inclined to go that route.

DownSouthWS6 06-26-2013 04:51 PM

I've never seen a whipple on an LS1 (wont fit under the hood of an f-body) but I talked to a guy with a Magnuson supercharger on his WS6 and he was making 420rwtq at like 2500 rpm. It's a good thing you've got 335s on that car.

ruut 06-27-2013 06:34 AM

Most of the time it will have some sort of R-comps on it and that should help with grip. It will see some street use but I won't be pushing it on the road, just cruising.

I Was browsing zilvia the other day and there was a guy on there selling his FD which had a supercharged 383 SBC (might have been a 408, idr). i think it was around 700 to 800hp w/ 800 tq. said it spun until about 120 Lol. went thru 2 t-56's before finally switching to a th400. apparently it is very scary to drive

i think a turbo would be a better option because the massive torque amounts isn't instant. a friend of mine had a 900~ hp LSx FD and although it was silly f*ckin fast, it was much more streetable

Yeah, that much hp is useless for the most part. I just want to get to the point where I have as much as I can use.

ruut 06-30-2013 05:17 PM

Worked on wiring and rebuilding the core support today. The lower support will be welded in but the upper won't. I want it modular so it's easier to remove the engine.

Yeah, I have been working on some boring stuff like wiring and fuel lines. I have been on vacation for the last 8 days but will be hard at it when I get back. I will have some good pics then.
Here are some pics of some new stuff including the headers that I'm modding. These are temporary headers for now. I want to make some custom 180 headers.

The car is going to be a continual project. One idea I'm kicking around is making it a Coupe. I think it would be cool to be the only S2000 that's a coupe, let alone a V8 coupe. Xyster and I are working on a design but haven't landed on one yet. I like this rendering.
