Let's go to Mendocino!!
Hey, all!!
My GF and I just got back from Mendocino...what an incredible drive!! All I could think about was that it would be a perfect place to do a group drive with y'all. I am planning to go back up there sometime in February with som Sacramento area S2000 owners and would love to have you join us. I am in the process of making arrangements for an overnight stay there. Would you guys be interested in going? Here are some pics of our trip:
Cleared for takeoff!!

Highway 128....My all-time favorite road sign:

And it wasn't just an empty promise....the road delivers with curve after curve. All 5 senses were tantilized with VTEC revs and beautiful scenery accompanied by the sweet smell of fern and Redwood. It was incredible:

We break out of the forest, but the fun doesn't end...there is no doubt in my mind Honda designed the car for roads like these:

I am having the time of my life on these roads!! I guess I got a little carried away...I look over at Shannon as I grin from ear-to-ear, and she's not looking so great. It turns out all those hills and hairpins made her carsick!!
I took it easy for the rest of the trip, but the damage was done. Sorry, Shannon!!
We reach the top of the hill and are warmly greeted by this:

It's a picture-perfect day on the CA coast. No fog, no overcast, just sun and WARM TEMPS. This place is pure heaven in the S2000 with the top down. Unless you are Shannon with a queazy stomach.

The road is well-paved and full of twisties. We (I) enjoy every hairpin until we reach our destination at the Little River Inn. Here, the S looks out over the Pacific toward her homeland in Tochigi, Japan. Shannon takes a breather.

We open the door to our room, and our jaws drop as we are greeted by this view....and this is where we'd stay as a group:

We unpack and relax on the balcony. I am simply astounded at the view from there. It is breathtaking! Shannon goes inside to lay down and ease her queaziness (sorry, Shannon!!) while I stay outside and admire the sunlight glistening off the waves of the deep blue Pacific. Out of the corner of my eye, I see an otter frolicking in the water. He was having a good old time splashing around doing flips and rolls. He kept me entertained for a good while. The day slowly fades, and I was lucky enough to snap a killer pic of one of the most perfect sunsets I've ever witnessed. Simply awe-inspiring:

Another partial pic of the view from the room:

The next morning, Shannon and I head into Mendocino. It's a glorious day. Sun for miles, and nice warm weather. I pull over for a quick pic of the S with the cozy little coastal town of Mendocino as a backdrop.

I love this little town...so much charm, so relaxing, and so beautiful!

We arrive and I get the perfect parking spot:

Shannon and I spend a FUN-filled day shopping and eating GREAT food and just checking out all the cool stuff there is in Mendocino. I'd love to do it all again with a group of S2000s. Let me know if you'd be interested.

looks like it was a great trip Rob! I do believe that the car was built with those wonderful roads in mind! Thanks for sharing the pics too! I will be out of the country in Feb but I hope other owners around the area will join as those roads up there are truly beautiful, as is the views!
I would be interested in a group trip. But, remember Rob, February is still a pretty wet month. If you plan it for April/May timeframe we could get a more cooperating weather and days will be longer to enjoy the drive too.
Max.
Max.
I was told by locals that February is beautiful in Mendo. It's ususally nice up there when it's crappy here. Actually, I was up there last January and it was gorgeous. Nothing but sun. We should be alright if we go in February. Dates coming soon.

We had our honeymoon in Mendocino (30 years ago this May) in my '61 Porsche and have been a fan ever since. That was one incredible day you got there, mostly it seems foggy up there to us. Wee would be very interested in this trip. We went up last spring driving my buddy's '87 Carrera and it was awesome. People really move over when they see a bright red Porsche in the mirror. Would be better in a "modern" sports car though!
I spent 3 days there about 2 years ago in an S. (Thank you Rylan) YES the drive is fantastic. We had a great time travelling with a guy on a sportbike who we eventually stopped and talked to. He gave me the scoop on some of the local roads to hit, a couple of which we did manage to spend some time on. It's breathtaking up there, and certainly my favorite spot in california.
On the way north I headed NW from Cloverdale. This was an AMAZING drive to the coast. Gas up when you leave 101. If you head North from mendo the trip back over the mountains to where 1 rejoins 101 is a blast. Don't forget to stop and drive your car through the giant redwood. (Rylan, where did you stash those pictures I sent you?) We headed back home from mendo by heading easy on 20. This is a great drive too, but it wasnt nearly the drive that coming in the other way was. I would highly recommend doing it as a loop to get the best of both.
Congrats on your fun getaway. It's a great place to spend some time and let-go of the bay area. It's easy to forget how beautiful california is.
