Default Need help sorting out stereo, any recommendations?

Yo!

It looks like the previous owner of my car had a sub installed in the trunk (luckily it was done very cleanly and non-destructively) so just a fuse in the engine bay remains. I haven't pulled the door panels to check yet, but looking through the speaker grills it looks like the door speakers were probably aftermarket and have probably been removed as well, as I am getting so sound out of the current setup. It is a fairly recent Alpine head unit with USB, etc. I would guess the tweeters and the headrest speakers are untouched but I am getting no sound from it (even static) when testing using the radio. I suppose it is possible the radio cable could be disconnected but is it possible that without door speakers I wouldn't get any sound from the rest of them? I am waiting to get the factory service manual to pull the door panels but I will hunt down a DIY and take a look.

Basically I am looking for a good shop or someone local that can take a look and makes some good recommendations on speakers if I need to replace any. I don't plan on adding a sub as it's just not my style, I will be more than happy with the oem setup. If my door speakers are in fact gone I will probably look into some nice Alpines as I have always had good luck.

I know the basics but I don't pretend to no anything more when it comes to car stereos.

Let me know! Thanks.

Doesn't Rick do this kind of work?

I'm not big on audio but I found the speakers to be OK but the stock head to be weak.

Focal speakers FTW. My guess is your car had an external amp and when they yanked the sub and amp didn't reconnect wires. I still swear I saw a speaker in your door but it was 2am and I was a bit wound up from the drive during our door spelunking expedition.

You might want to reconsider running an amp if you are already pre wired. S2000 is a loud car and the factory radio or even an aftermarket radio barely puts out any sound.

Those C5's are nice speakers btw.

I would start by tracing out the connection/cables. You can remove your door panels fairly easy to determine if they speakers are OEM/aftermarket. As for the integrated speakers in the rollhoops; you should be able to see the cables if you pull off the panels behind the seat, its not bad at all.

If youre not going to run a sub; I would remove that Amp cable - just extra weight & an open connection to the battery. Its probably going from the battery-passenger side firewall-under the carpet along the door sills-back out to the trunk.

Check on the depth of the speakers you plan on upgrading to, to ensure you clear the window. I had to use some Lucid Speaker Ring adapters to clear my speakers - they work great but are discontinued. Not hard to improvise & make though.

Trust me even the OEM speakers would be fine for me with an aftermarket head unit. No extra weight will be given up to stereo equipment beyond what is there from the factory!

Thanks! Yeah the amp cable is actually run from the passenger side to the driver side firewall hole, bunch of amateurs, so it is draped across some stuff that gets rather toasty, but very strong shielded cable. I may just remove it from the battery, and cut it after it reaches the interior, and then remove it when I have a good reason to pull other parts of the interior off.

I do probably want to run a USB cable from the back of the head unit, but I think I will be fine just keeping it in the passenger net when it's not in use, with a long enough cable to make it easy to use.

if youre trying to remove the cable, its fairly easy. only 3 panels to pop off + taking out the radio and youre done. you can wire up your usb at the same time. i have my aux coming out from the driver side for easy use.
