Default Passenger Window Shattered on Freeway...

I was just minding my business, sipping hot chocolate on 101 getting ready to exit Moffet Blvd when my passenger window shattered. I had the top up and windows up (hey, it was cold...hence the hot chocolate).

The whole window is in like a thousand pieces on the passenger floor. It sounded like it was hit by a baseball bat, but I don't have any idea why it would shatter. I don't think anything hit the window, although I think I had just passed an overpass. Maybe stress on the window from the top? That would be interesting if it was.

What do you guys think I should do? Try to get it replaced under my extended warranty? Would that cover this? (I'm thinking not...) Got any idea how much a new window costs? I'm really glad it wasn't the driver window because that glass could have easily caused an accident, and I'm REALLY glad no one was in my passenger seat...

If I get it replaced...would this happen again?

Thanks,
DDH

I've had this happen to me before but not in the S. It was in my Civic. I think a rock or something hit the window pretty hard and it just shattered. Very scary thing to happen while you're on the freeway. Not to mention...dangerous.

My insurance paid for my damage...minus the deductible of course.

I remember reading somewhere that the windows are designed to shatter into pieces so you don't get big sharp pieces of glass sticking into your body after impact. My S2k's passenger side window shattered into pieces (in an accident) after it was hit in the middle by a thick tree branch.

Yeah but I don't remember reading anywhere that the windshield would explode like that

Nothing should shatter without a reason. I'm sure something must have hit the window.

It's not unheard of. Windows can shatter out of the blue due to cold or heat. I have had a driver's window (in another car) explode due to leaving it parked in the sun all day with the windows up.

There is quite a lot of construction going on in that area, especially if you are exiting Moffet Blvd from 101 South. Maybe some debris from the construction site was accidentally launched at your car....
