To see how much of the sun is covered you can put a pinhole in a piece of cardboard and use it to project the sun's image on another piece of cardboard, or onto the ground.
The sun filtering through the leaves of a small tree can make hundreds of dancing crescents on the sidewalk.

For once i got some information from this list before the event was over.
I just hold my hand out and make a small opening between my thumb and forefinger and make a shadow about 10 feet away. The bright spot in the middle shows the sun's shape. That's good enough to tell the current shape of the sun.
