Default T1 Connection-- Educate Me?

Can anyone educate me on T1 lines? How much does it cost monthly and is it significantly faster than DSL? Reason why I ask is because this one salesguy wants to integrate all 3 of our fax lines, DSL, and 6 phone lines onto one T1. He says we could save significantly? Is this true?

Trust me, it won't help your post count. There is still a 15-sec delay...

Currently, there are DSL packages that do offer speed similar or faster than T1, but a T1 line will give you reliability of service and your bandwidth is not shared. If your uptime is critical to your applications or business, then T1 is the way to go!

T1 means 24 digtal voice channels.... so your data uses 1 or 2 channels through CSU/DSU, phone system can go through your T1 through PRI, Faxes through FXS modules and Analog through FXO modules...

your salesguy is selling you T1 so all your lines go through it, voice and data. its not usually faster than DSL because you are not using full T1 for data... you are using 1 or 2 channels.

T1 is around $1000 ~ a month

here's a guide:
T1 - 1.544 megabits per second (24 digital lines)
T3 - 43.232 megabits per second (28 T1s)
OC3 - 155 megabits per second (84 T1s)
OC12 - 622 megabits per second (4 OC3s)
OC48 - 2.5 gigabits per seconds (4 OC12s)
OC192 - 9.6 gigabits per second (4 OC48s)

It depends how fast your data connection will be. How fast is your current DSL line, both directions?

A T1 has 24 channels which can be used for voice or data. If you need 9 voice channels (3 for fax and 6 for phone) then there would be 15 channels left over for data. The cost will depend on how many channels you would use total.

One of the primary reasons a business would choose a T1 over DSL, like abzug said, is for reliability. You get written assurances for uptime that are backed with immediate response from technical support.

T1 lines vary greatly in price depending on how much the "last mile" or local loop costs. If you are downtown in the city, T1 lines are ~$500 a month become you are very close to a central office.

It also depends whether you have a dedicated T-1 line or a shared T-1 line. I know at work we have a dedicated line and its super fast. If you compare it to DSL, well it makes DSL seem like your on dial up.

the reason T1 cost so much is because of its consistent speed at 1.5mbps UP AND DOWN.

Normal for home DSL and Cable can gaurantee you up to from 300 to 800 kbps DOWN but they ain't true speed, and you will only get around 30kbps UP from DSL and CABLE.

T1 is usually faster than DSL or CABLE is because you are gauranteed the speed at a certain rate, not "up to". And the upload speed is way faster.
